CLEVELAND CONTEMPORARY DANCE THEATRE
"DUKES IT OUT" WITH DUKE ELLINGTON
AT THE UNIVERSITY OF AKRON FOR
BLACK HISTORY MONTH
Michael Medcalf, choreographer and executive/artistic director of Cleveland
Contemporary Dance Theatre (CCDT), a Cleveland-based contemporary dance
company that celebrates, teaches and promotes diversity through dance, is set
to unveil his latest dance creation entitled Brasilliance and introduce
CONSORT!, CCDT's 12 member youth ensemble on February 7 and 8, at 8pm at the
Paul Daum Theater in Kolbe Hall on the campus of the University of Akron.
In Brasilliance Medcalf combines dashes of Latin flavor, with pinches of
intense musicality and then mixes it up with the energetic spirit that is
synonymous with CCDT to create this delectable new dance dish. Medcalf's
highly energetic and technically demanding new work is set to selections from
the sizzling score of jazz great Duke Ellington's Latin American Suite.
Medcalf states "I have always loved Ellington's music and was highly inspired
to create a work that would embody the visceral essence and colors contained
in his music." The composer was inspired to create the work during his
band's tour of South American. Medcalf's Brasilliance is sure to become a
company favorite for time to come! Medcalf will be joined on stage by CCDT
company members Natasha Colon, Desmond Davis, Rachel Holden, Jason R. Joyner,
Aseelah Shareef, and Leah Smiley.
Also on this program the company will perform Medcalf's Ostinato (2000), All
of Me (2002), and the company's signature work Love Suite, Love (2001) set to
the music of Marvin Gaye.
In addition, this program will also showcase the extraordinary work and
commitment that CCDT makes to the the youth with in our community as it
presents CONSORT!, it's 12 member ensemble of socio-economically challenged
youth ages 12-21. CONSORT! will perform Medcalf's Sacred Grounds, a
pulsating and highly dynamic tribal work crafted especially for the talented
youth ensemble. Later in the program CONSORT! will join its mentors from CCDT
in Medcalf's "At Church", a tour de force spiritual "dance" revival.
CONSORT! members include Maria Adams, Dominique Baker, Faruq Hussein-Bey,
