IFP/Chicago Facets Film Series Presents=20

Israel in Exile

Director Juan Ramirez in Attendance!

Wednesday January 8
7:00 pm
Facets Multi-media, 1517 W. Fullerton

"Israel in Exile is a magical drama involving a Mexican curandera (healer),=20
her emotionally-haunted son in Chicago, and a cocky young > Chicano=20
practicing black magic. Israel Mendoza is an aging boxer confronted by the=20
young champ whose life he once saved. Their battle involves fate, temptation=
=20
and La Virgen de Guadalupe. The protagonist in this parable of Mexican=20
immigration is lonely and poor. His spiritual link to his mother in=20
Zacatecas, a region heavily impacted by emigration to the United States, is=20
otherworldly. It is her power that gives him strength. The Chicano champ is=20
angry at the sacrifice the Mexican immigrant made on his behalf. The young=20
champ, simply called The Kid, derides and tricks Israel. Yet, The Kid is the=
=20
one that initiates their battle to finally confront their demons.

Israel in Exile was made in collaboration with the Mexican Fine Arts Museum=20
of Chicago, one of the largest private Mexican cultural museums in the=20
nation. Presented in a style of poetic realism, with a soundtrack that range=
s=20
from traditional Latin to urban rap, this bilingual odyssey is a unique=20
cinematic hybrid."=A0 - Slamdance 2002
