Life at Dobama Theatre*

Dobama’s March production of Suzan-Lori Parks’ In the Blood has received a
generous sponsorship from the Cyrus Eaton Foundation which will principally
be used toward funding actors’ and director’s salaries.

In the Blood is a 2000 Pulitzer Prize nominee, and its author, Suzan-Lori
Parks, has written over 15 plays. In 2001 she won the prestigious McArthur
Grant, and she has since gone on to become the first African-American woman
to win the Pulitzer Prize, in 2002, for her play Topdog/Underdog.

Returning to Dobama’s stage will be RaSheryl McCreary. Ms. McCreary’s last
appearance at Dobama was in the one-woman play, Truth. She has been seen on
Cleveland stages in Pretty Fire, Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar & Grill,
Antigone, The Madwoman of Chaillot and The Changeling. She is a gifted
singer, actress and writer.

In the Blood will be directed by Sonya Robbins, a freelance director and
theatre-educator. Her work at Dobama includes How I Learned to Drive, Three
Days of Rain, W;t, and last year’s Refuge. She has worked in various
capacities at most of the area theatres and also co-founded a company of
local, professional artists called Moving Spaces. This last summer she
directed Sarah Morton’s Night Bloomers as part of her fellowship with the
Lincoln Center Directors Lab.

“Suzan-Lori Parks asks questions about the way we live today and draws a
line between rhetoric and behavior,” says Robbins. “She engages us in a
dialogue that plays with stereotypes of class and race.”
