On Monday, March 3rd, Cleveland theaters and performers will stand up in the
first-ever worldwide theatrical event for peace, joining more than 739
readings in 42 Countries in readings of Lysistrata, Aristophanes’ 2,400
year-old anti-war comedy, to support peaceful resolution in Iraq. Through
this ancient Greek comedy, performers intend to provide a humorous entree
into a healthy community dialogue about the world today. That’s what
theaters do.

Aristophanes' Lysistrata tells the story of women from opposing states who
unite to end a war, taking over the treasury and pressuring their husbands
to negotiate peace by refusing to sleep with them until the men agree to lay
down their swords. Written 2,400 years ago, Aristophanes' words can still
make us laugh and remind us that there are alternatives to war.

Cleveland readings (except where noted, all readings are at 8:00 on Monday
March 3, 2003) are offered free to the public:

* Pilgrim Congregational Church (West 14th Street and Starkweather Avenue in
Tremont), sponsored by Bodwin Theatre Company;
* Community College's Eastern Campus (in the 2nd floor plaza area of
building E3, located off of Richmond Road near Harvard Road). This reading
will be offered on March 3rd at 1:00 pm., sponsored by the Women's
Collective at the Eastern Campus;
* Ensemble Theatre Lee Road and Mayfield Road in Cleveland Heights,
sponsored by StageWrites Collective.

The Cleveland performers join theaters in every state of the nation, as well
as theaters in London, Berlin, Paris, Beirut, Jerusalem and other cities in
a call for peaceful resolution. In New York City, where the project
originated, dozens of teams of actors and directors will read Lysistrata in
public spaces throughout the day, concluding with an all-star reading,
scheduled to include Mercedes Ruehl in the title role, with F. Murray
Abraham, Kevin Bacon, Peter Boyle Kathleen Chalfont, Delphi Harrington, Kyra
Sedgwick and others will also participate. A Los Angeles production will
feature Julie Christie, Alfre Woodard, Christine Lahti, Mary McDonnell,
Barbara Williams, Eric Stoltz, Ed Begley Jr. and Jose Zuniga.

Theaters are joining the project and the total number of participants may
increase. The Lysistrata Project was conceived in early January of this
year by New York actors Kathryn Blume and Sharron Bower.
