To the tables down at Mory's,To the place where Louis dwells,To the dear =
old temple bar we love so well,Sing the Whiffenpoofs assembled, With their =
glasses raised on high,And the magic of their singing casts its spell* =
Thus waxes nostalgic "The Whiffenpoof Song," the legendary namesake of the =
Yale Whiffenpoofs, the oldest and most prestigious collegiate a capella =
singing group in the nation. These "gentlemen songsters," who this year =
include former Medina resident Vikram Swamy (MHS Class of '99, active in =
numerous musical productions and choirs), bring their act to the Medina =
High School Performing Arts Center (777 E. Union St. in Medina) on =
Saturday, April 19th at 2:00pm, for an afternoon of singing and entertainme=
nt. Founded in 1909, the Whiffenpoofs are a group of 14 senior men from =
Yale University, chosen annually by each preceding class. The rich =
history of the group begins at the New Haven establishment known as Mory's =
(a Yale institution in itself, dating back to 1848), where four members of =
the Glee Club acquired the habit of singing for their supper every Monday =
night. The tradition continues to be an integral part of the Whiffenpoof =
experience to this day, as the Whiffenpoofs continue to delight audiences =
all over the world with their a capella arrangements of jazz standards, =
classic ballads, traditional Yale songs, and recent popular hits. =
Throughout the 20th century, the Whiffenpoofs have grown from their humble =
beginnings as Monday night crooners to claim a permanent niche in American =
culture. Cole Porter, Yale Class of 1913 and author of such American =
musical classics as Anything Goes and Kiss Me Kate, highlights the list of =
noteworthy Whiffenpoof alumni, which also includes Senator Prescott Bush, =
father of former President George Bush. Rudy Vallee (Whiffenpoofs of =
1927) gave "The Whiffenpoof Song" nationwide recognition when he recorded =
a solo version of the ballad in the 1930s, and later, Louis Armstrong and =
Ella Fitzgerald (made an honorary Whiffenpoof in 1979) followed suit with =
their own recordings. In recent years, the Whiffenpoofs have performed =
for the likes of Presidents Reagan, Bush, and Clinton, Mother Theresa, and =
the Dalai Lama, in venues such as Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, and the =
Rose Bowl, and for events such as the World Series, Saturday Night Live, =
NBC's Today Show, and most recently The West Wing last December. Today, =
the Whiffenpoofs continue their Monday night tradition at Mory's (this =
past Monday was no exception), in addition to large-scale concerts at Yale =
for Parents' Weekend, the weekend of the Harvard-Yale football game, and =
Commencement. In addition to their New Haven engagements, the group =
performs extensively throughout the tri-state area during the year and in =
more distant locales during their winter and spring breaks; this year, =
Florida and Costa Rica. The culmination of each Whiffenpoof year is the =
group's summer World Tour, which this year will include China, Japan, =
Thailand, Nepal, Australia, New Zealand, India, Turkey, Spain, Austria, =
Sweden, Czech Republic, England, and Ireland. Tickets are $5 general =
admission and the performance begins at 2:00pm. The Medina High School =
Performing Arts Center is located on 777 E. Union St. in Medina, OH. =20
