Before everyone gets all up in arms over this upcoming FCC ruling, please
check out www.snopes.com. Under "What's New" you will find this very same
issue posted today (5/12/03). Dave and Barb Mikkelson, two journalists who
run this site, have researched this very issue and have a great deal of
information showing that some of the "scare tactics" being used in the
forwarded e-mail are overblown.

For instance, the loosening of restrictions only applies to medium and large
markets (determined by some phantom formula that the FCC applies) and not to
small markets (Cleveland is a medium market). It will allow networks to own
affiliates that reach no more than 45% of the viewing audience in any given
area (up from the current 35%). However, it will not remove the
restrictions placed on corporate ownerships of more than one network. ABC,
NBC, CBS, and FOX will not be able to be owned by one company under the new
regulations.

Check it out for yourselves: www.snopes.com.

> I hope everyone signed up to have their sentiments heard, legislation like
this causes lots of problems.... due to the minor loophole generated during
the legislation regarding the baby bells (local telephone companies) getting
the abbilities to enter the international telephone market. corporations
were allowed to buy up several radio stations now the bulk of radio stations
are owned by only a few corporations. This has resulted with massive
problems (some being illegal and unethical), not to mention less freedom for
local stations. DO NOT let this happen again. Do not give that much power
to corporations to control and dictate what is and is not shown on televised
media, nothing good can come out of this.
