!!DEADLINE FOR ENROLLMENT IS JULY 7!!

Horror film Camp
presented by First Cut Studios Inc. at Benedictine High School.

Session 1
It’s Alive! An Intro to american horror
--Camp begins with a crash course in the history of the American Horror
film, beginning with the Universal cycle of the 1930’s and its development
after World War II. Different ways of interpreting horror films will be
examined as well as basics of horror movie production: make-up, lighting,
sound, and cinematography. Movies will include Frankenstein, THEM!, and
Psycho, with clips from Nosferatu, The Phantom of the Opera, and Cat People.

Session 2
monsters 101: producing horror
--Using a original script by BHS graduate Peter Matuszewski, students will
work on the set of a short horror movie in several capacities: light and
sound crews, make-up/costume crew, and digital photography. Effective use of
budget in producing horror will be looked at in Night of the Living Dead,
The Mummy (1932), and The Mummy (1999).

Session 3
Nightmares, Chainsaws, and Questions
--In this session, students will discuss some of the more controversial
aspects of the horror genre such as the depiction of women and the dubious
pleasure of explicit violence, tying in with the broader question of why
people watch horror movies in the first place. Students will also receive a
brief tutorial in non-linear digital editing with Final Cut Pro using the
camp movie shot in session 2. Movies will include The Texas Chainsaw
Massacre, Halloween, Alien, and Evil Dead 2. Optional clips will come from
Blood and Black Lace and Suspira.
