YO-TV Program Director
The Educational Video Center (EVC) is an award-winning not-for-profit
media
arts center that teaches documentary video production and media analysis
to
youth, educators, and community organizers. EVC's mission is dedicated
to
the creative and community-based use of video and multi-media as tools
for
social change and as means to develop the literacy, research, public
speaking, and work preparation skills of young people from diverse
communities across New York City.
EVC seeks a Program Director for Youth Organizers Television (YO-TV), a
paid
ten-month internship program through which youth media-makers produce a
documentary commissioned by a professional client. The YO-TV Program
Director serves as instructor to the crew of youth producers, oversees
all
aspects of the documentary production, and manages all aspects of the
program including grant proposal development and project budgeting. This
position is four days per week and is offered on a ten-month contract
(running from October thru July) with the possibility for contract
renewal.
Past YO-TV documentaries have been screened at the Human Rights Watch
International Film Festival, exhibited at the Brooklyn Museum of Art,
and
broadcast nationally on Bill Moyers' PBS series.
Qualifications
. B.A. and minimum three years experience as an educator, with
particular
experience teaching documentary video production to youth;
. Strong demonstrated experience in management of youth programs,
including
experience with budgets and grant proposals;
. Exceptional leadership skills, group facilitation skills, and written
&
oral communication skills;
. Broad understanding of, and experience with, professional quality
video
production and non-linear post-production editing capabilities including
proficiency in Final Cut Pro;
. Knowledge of media literacy and commitment to the use of media as a
tool
for social change and as means to develop the literacy and leadership
skills
of young people;
. Commitment to and ability to employ the EVC mission and methodology,
as
founded upon a student-centered and inquiry-based approach to a hands-on
learning;
. Ability to work in a highly collaborative environment necessitating
qualities such as cultural awareness, integrity, humor, team-building,
and
conflict management;
. Passion for teaching, for documentary video production, and for
activism
around social issues.
Responsibilities
Program Management:
. Write grant proposals and final reports in support of the YO-TV
program in
coordination with the Managing Director and the Executive Director, and
act
as lead liaison to client;
. Manage the program budget and maintain all appropriate program
financial
records;
. Attend and contribute to EVC staff and study group meetings, and
promote
the organization and its mission to outside partners, funders, donors,
and
volunteers.
Teaching:
. Teach advanced elements of digital video production and non-linear
post-production, including camerawork, lighting, sound, and editing with
Final Cut Pro;
. Coach and facilitate the YO-TV crew in the screening and public
presentation of their documentary and in the assessment of their
learning
through portfolio roundtables;
. Counsel and coach the YO-TV team members in fulfilling requirements
for
high school graduation and/or in applying to colleges, media related
internships, or jobs.
Production:
. Recruit, teach, and facilitate a team of six youth producers to
collaboratively plan, research, shoot, and edit a social issue
documentary
for a professional client;
. Oversee maintenance of production and post-production equipment used
by
YO-TV;
. Manage the crew in the organization of their extensive pre-production
research and the development of a post-production printed and/or online
classroom guide for the documentary.
Specifications
Annual salary is pro-rated for ten months at four days per week from
full-time range of $35,000-$38,000, and is commensurate with experience.
