PORTHOUSE THEATRE’S THIRTY-FIFTH ANNIVERSARY PROVES TO BE RECORD-BREAKING IN INCOME, ATTENDANCE AND SUBSCRIBERS

Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio – The 2003 summer season for Porthouse Theatre had much promise, yet the summer professional theatre’s directors had no idea what successes were ahead as they sped into a season of A Chorus Line, The Importance of Being Earnest and Oklahoma!. The season proved to be the best season ever for the 512-seat outdoor professional theatre located on the grounds of Blossom Music Center. Final numbers revealed a whopping $200,255 in earned income, compared to the prior season which earned a little over $150,000.

“We are absolutely elated with the season’s outcome,” said John Crawford, producing director of Porthouse Theatre. “Taking into consideration that our season spans only two and a half months out of the year, the reality of it is that most nights we had a packed house. During these tough economic times, that is quite a feat for any theatre to claim.”

Additionally, early on in the season, Porthouse Theatre saw a increase in subscriptions by 450 new subscribers, adding an additional 3,000 tickets to the number sold over the 2002 summer season. “We reached our goal by 125%, which is incredible,” said Elisabeth Madden, managing director.

“More and more people are discovering Porthouse theatre and these numbers certainly reflect the public’s response to professional, outdoor theatre,” said Terri Kent, artistic director of Porthouse Theatre.

Porthouse Theatre is a cultural service of Kent State University. Porthouse Theatre programs and activities are made possible in part by funding from the Ohio Arts Council, Akron Community Foundation, The Murdough Foundation, Metropolitan Life Foundation and Kent State University Foundation.

Porthouse Theatre was founded in 1968 by Dr. William H. Zucchero and Dr. Louis O. Erdmann and continues to serve as an emblem of Kent State University’s commitment to cultural service and the quality of life in the northeast Ohio region it serves.
