DEADLINE EXTENDED TO OCT 31 TO SIGN-UP FOR THE BACK-BY-POPULAR-DEMAND
DOCUMENTARY WORKSHOP AT THE 2003 OHIO INDEPENDENT FESTIVAL NOV 1-9

For Immediate Release: October 22, 2003

Contact: Annetta Marion or Bernadette Gillota, Co-Artistic Directors,
(216) 651-7315

Cleveland, Ohio-True to form for Independent Pictures' mission to
help filmmakers hone their craft, this year's Ohio Independent Film
Festival (November 1-9) includes a documentary workshop in addition
to its signature Director of Photography workshop and a weeklong
program of innovative shorts and feature-length films. The Sugar
Pictures Documentary Workshop will be held Saturday, November 1, 9:00
am-6:00 pm at the Gordon Square Arcade, 6516 Detroit Avenue in
Cleveland, Ohio.

Back by popular demand from the 2002 OIFF, the Sugar Pictures
Documentary Workshop not only provides insights on technique but also
clues participants into hard-won lessons on researching, producing,
fund-raising, and the marketing of non-fiction films from
professional filmmakers. During the class, students are invited to
ask questions pertaining to their own specific projects. Students
will receive a workbook including sample proposals, budgets,
contracts and case studies (if you can't attend the workshop, the
workbook is available for purchase as well).

Instructor Thom Powers is the owner of New York-based Sugar Pictures.
His studio has produced projects for HBO, CINEMAX, and PBS, and
offers workshops to people interested in pursuing a career in
documentary film or learning techniques to produce more professional
video projects; many workshops focus on the fundamentals beginning
with pre-production to distribution. Powers says, in Cleveland
Scene's January 1, 2003 article What's Up With All the
Documentaries?, "I'd like to see more videos coming out of the
Midwest."

Powers teaches from his real world experience on topics such as: how
to approach foundations and broadcasters for support, how to write a
good proposal, how to conduct an interview, budgeting tips, and more.
This course, a compacted version of a 12-week course Powers teaches
at New York University's School of Professional Studies opens the
festival's week of programming. Call (216) 651-7315 to reserve your
space. Fee for the class is $150. DEADLINE FOR REGISTRATION IS NOW
OCTOBER 31, 2003. You can also pay at the door November 1 if space is
available (class size is limited).

TAKE THIS COURSE IF you want to pursue a professional career in
documentary film production, you want to produce stronger
instructional or educational films for your business, school, or
organization, you oversee media projects, you want to create stronger
better personal or family videos.
