Popular Curriculum Drama Seeks Special Performers

Auditions for a versatile character actor with strong Mime, dance or
movement skills will be held Noon-3:00 p.m. on Saturday, December 20,
2003 at the Public Library Main Branch in Downtown Cleveland. CheryLee
Wilson, Executive Producer of Ninth House Productions says she will see
callbacks at 4 p.m. Selected candidates will receive contract
opportunities and production schedules by mail and begin the
"Works-In-Progress" production for school tours in mid-January.

"Harriet's Journey on the Underground Railroad" presents a rich canvas
for any multi-talented actor to color. "It is highly entertaining and
educational but the performance is physically brutal on the performer.
I know!" Says Wilson who developed the lead role performance while
touring it for fifteen years, "It is physically brutal to perform and
the actor who plays Storyteller/Mime has to have the physical stamina,
versatility, and spontaneity to carry the story to its learning
objective." Auditioners should prepare a 60-second Mime sketch; 2
character improvisations (displaying a character younger and one older
than your age); a ballad, blues or gospel sung in accapella style, dance
to African rhythms, and bring a resume and current photo to the
15-minute interview.

Music, song, dance and mime have led a diverse group of audiences
through a daring 'escape and rescue' with Harriet Tubman on the
Underground Railroad. This curriculum drama made its debut with Young
Audiences of Greater Cleveland in 1983 through the guidance and
mentoring support of (the late) Mrs. Elizabeth Flory Kelly. New
learning technologies empower the familiar program to develop critical
thinking skills that manage the human feelings stirred up by Language
Arts exercises during the performance." The production company will
make casting choices from among the strongest imaginative talent
available regardless of race or gender. We are also looking for a
volunteer with sign language proficiency to interpret the
"Works-In-Progress" preview performance.

Ninth House Productions is a member organization of The Arts Network.
"The Network is the only local arts organization where art-in-education
merges the Arts and the Humanities in curriculum experiences for
learners of every age," says Ms. Wilson. Since 1986, the unique
presentation has become a popular school assembly. The production
company is revitalizing the performance content to reflect multicultural
themes that connect the traditional "Black History Month" program to
over 150 schools toured in Pennsylvania, Michigan, Indiana, and
Illinois. "Works-In-Progress" performances highlighting
art-in-education techniques for educators are available to Northeast
Ohio school or community groups with adequate stage and multimedia
facilities. For more information, presenters should send email requests
to: ugrrnet at earthlink.net, or contact Ms. Wilson at (216) 658-3306.

Cleveland Public Library Main Branch is located at 525 Superior Avenue
in Downtown Cleveland. Ask the Business, Economics and Labor
Department information desk on the second floor for directions to Room
218 (East), or call (216) 623-2927.
