Jennifer Muller, artistic director of Jennifer Muller/The Works in New York
City, will speak at The University of Akron on Wednesday, Jan. 21.

   Muller will talk about =B3Dance: Shout or Whimper?=B2 at 7 p.m. on Jan. 21 i=
n
Guzzetta Recital Hall, 157 University Ave.
The lecture is part of the Mary Schiller Myers Lecture Series presented by
the UA College of Fine and Applied Arts, and is free and open to the public=
.

   Muller is presenting the Myers Lecture as part of her residency this
spring with the UA Dance Program.  In December Muller auditioned the Dance
Program=B9s advanced students, and in January she returns for the lecture and
to set her piece =B3Bounce=B2 on the UA Dance Company for its Ohio premiere
March 11 and 12 at E.J. Thomas Performing Arts Hall.

   A widely recognized leader in the dance world, Muller was chosen in
September as a founding member of the World Arts Council, a branch of the
biannual Arts Summit.  Other founding members of the council are Toyo Ito
and Santiago Calatrava in architecture and design, Sydney Pollack in cinema=
,
Irene Papas and Ian Herbert in theater arts, and Placido Domingo in music.

   As the artistic director of Jennifer Muller/The Works since its inceptio=
n
in 1974, Muller has toured with the company to 37 countries and throughout
the United States, and produced 18 seasons of dance performances in New Yor=
k
City.
As a playwright Muller has created more than 80 performance pieces; and, as
a designer, she has designed lights, decor and costumes.  A notable
collaborator, she has worked with Keith Jarrett, Keith Haring, Nana
Vasconcelos, Sandro Chia and Yoko Ono.

   Her commissions for 23 major repertory companies in nine countries
include the Nederlands Dans Theater, NDT3, Alvin Ailey, Ohio Ballet, Lyon
Opera Ballet, Ballet du Nord, Ballet Contemporaneo, Ballet Jazz de Montreal
and Tian Jiang's China tour.

   Established in 1979 by arts patron Mary Schiller Myers and her late
husband, Louis, the Myers Lecture Series brings nationally recognized
leaders in the arts and communication to the UA campus for lectures,
performances, master classes and residencies.  Past lecturers have included
journalists Daniel Schorr, Mary Alice Williams and Catherine Crier; directo=

Hal Prince; choreographers Jacques d'Amboise, Alwin Nikolais and Bella
Lewitzky; composer Gunther Schuller; jazz trumpeter Wynton Marsalis and
Boston Pops conductor Keith Lockhart.

   The University of Akron was named by Dance Spirit magazine in 1999 as
having one of the most sought-after dance programs in the country.  In
particular, the magazine praised UA=B9s offerings in ballet, modern dance and
musical theater.
