Song of Survival
featuring an all-female cast in a powerful drama with choral music

=B3The play reaffirmed my belief that the arts can make us whole, sustain us,
empower us to do the unimaginable.=B2
- Peter Troxell, KUSP-FM, National Public Radio

Song of Survival is the autobiographical work of Helen Colijn, who survived
three-and-one-half years of internment in Japanese prisoner-of-war camps.
Helen's account of her wartime experiences is a window into a largely
overlooked dimension of World War II - the imprisonment of women and
children in Southeast Asia by the Japanese and how these prisoners of war
responded to their dire circumstances. The conditions were harsh, terrible=
,
food was scarce and medicine unavailable. More than one third of the women
died of disease or starvation, yet their courage, faith, resiliency,
ingenuity, and camaraderie provide enduring lessons for life. Though the
prisoners had no musical instruments, they had their voices, and from memor=
y
scored classical works for symphony and piano. The music helped sustain
them while in captivity and was a lasting gift to a world that has witnesse=
d
too much war. =20

Present-day Helen, as narrator, faces herself as a younger Helen in the
group of imprisoned women. Conflict results. Today's Helen urges
forgiveness, young Helen insists that the daily horrors be remembered. Amon=
g
the prisoners there's humor, extraordinary courage and compassion, as well
as acts of selfishness. But above all, there's glorious music to unite them
and give them hope.
