The Canton Comic Opera Company

Announces its First Production,

THE FORTUNE TELLER by Victor Herbert;

March 19, 20, & 21

Canton, Ohio--

The Canton Comic Opera Company will present a semi-staged concert version of THE FORTUNE TELLER, a Comic Opera in Three Acts (1898), with music by Victor Herbert and libretto by Harry B. Smith, on Friday, March 19th and Saturday, March 20th at 8:00 p.m. and Sunday, March 21 at 2:00 p.m. All performances will be at Cable Recital Hall in the Cultural Center for the Arts, 1001 Market Ave. N., Canton. THE FORTUNE TELLER features an unparalleled cast of Northeast Ohio’s finest singers, directed by Musical Director, Mr. Adam Aceto of Michigan’s Ann Arbor Comic Opera Guild. The production will also be accompanied by Mr. Aceto and Mr. Patrick Johnson at the two pianos. Tickets are $15.00 for general admission and $10.00 for students and seniors. To purchase tickets or for more information call 330-327-2985, or view the Canton Comic Opera Company’s website at http://www.geocities.com/cantoncomicopera/main.html.

The Canton Comic Opera Company’s executive director, Mr. Joseph N. Rubin, founded the company to, “revive American operettas by composers such as Victor Herbert, Sigmund Romberg and Jerome Kern, which are rarely, if ever, performed anywhere in the United States and expose a new generation to this “lost” art form.” Rubin is also the founder and Executive Director of the highly successful Annual Lillian and Dorothy Gish Film Festival at the Lincoln Theatre in Massillon, now in its third year.

THE FORTUNE TELLER is a story of mistaken identities, picturesquely set in Hungary, involving a gypsy fortune teller and a heiress from Budapest who is studying for the ballet who looks just like her. The operetta boasts one of Victor Herbert’s best scores, featuring the famous “Gypsy Love Song” (“Slumber on, my little gypsy sweetheart”) and “Romany Life.” Herbert’s other successful operettas include BABES IN TOYLAND (1903) and NAUGHTY MARIETTA (1910). THE FORTUNE TELLER, although extremely popular and continuously revived until the 1950’s, has not been performed for more than 50 years and has fallen into undeserved neglect.

The Canton Comic Opera Company is a newly formed, non-profit, semi-professional theatre company, based in Canton, Ohio, dedicated to the preservation and performance of American operettas. Founded and incorporated in 2003 by executive director, Mr. Joseph N. Rubin, The Canton Comic Opera Company is a volunteer organization providing talented singers in the Northeastern Ohio community with the opportunity to perform in operetta productions. The Canton Comic Opera Company is the only theatre company in the world dedicated solely to the performance of historic American operettas.
