Lorain Community Music Theater Auditions for West Side Story will be held on=

Sat., Apr. 17, 2004 and Sun., Apr. 18, 2004. Registration at 12:30 p.m., =20
auditions 1 - 5 p.m. at St. Mary=E2=80=99s School Hall 7th & Reid Ave., Lo=
rain
Call-backs: Tues., Apr. 20, 2004 from 6-9 p.m.
VOCAL AUDITIONS will require that the individual prepare a selection from a=20
standard Broadway musical, approximately 90 seconds in length. An accompani=
st=20
will be provided, and the individual is required to bring sheet music in the=
=20
proper key. A song from West Side Story is permissible, whereas current pop=
=20
songs from the radio as well as a capella auditions are not acceptable.
DANCE AUDITIONS will require that the individual learn a short dance=20
combination that will be taught at the audition in a large group setting. A=
short=20
practice will be allowed, then the dance combination will be repeated in sma=
ll=20
groups. The individual is encouraged to wear comfortable clothing and shoes=
,=20
suitable for dance.

CHARACTER DESCRIPTIONS
Maria An extremely lovely, young girl brought to America to marry Chino,=20
but=20
yearns for Tony. Lyric soprano with 4+ songs. Dance preferred for dream=20
ballet.
Tony A good-looking, sandy-haired boy who used to be the leader of the=20
Jets,=20
but has outgrown the gang and is searching for something more. Lyric tenor=20
with 4+ songs. Movement preferred for dream ballet.
JETS
A-rab The class clown, A-rab uses humor to hide his fears, and serves as=20=
a=20
big brother to Baby John. Free spirit with good comic timing; must move and=
=20
sing well.
Action Action is always ready for a fight and mouthing off to any form of=
=20
authority. Tense and explosive, he leads the Jets after Riff is killed. =20
Must move and sing well.
Baby John The youngest of the gang, awed at everything. He is young,=20
innocent and vulnerable and is always the first to suggest non-violence to=20
solve a problem. Must move and sing well.
Big Deal A bespectacled self-styled expert. He is the =E2=80=98professor=
=E2=80=99 of the=20
gang, always mindful of the past and gang protocol. Must move and sing=20
well.
Diesel Riff=E2=80=99s lieutenant; the muscle of the group. The strong, s=
ilent=20
type,=20
Riff chooses him to fight Bernardo in the proposed =E2=80=98fair fight=E2=
=80=99. Must move=20
and sing well.
Riff The new leader (and heart) of the Jets. He and Tony started the=20
Jets,=20
and although Tony has outgrown the gang, Riff doesn=E2=80=99t know anything=20=

fights, bullies Baby John, and appears at key moments to save Tony and help=20
the Jets. Must move and sing well.
SHARKS
Bernardo The leader of the Sharks; handsome and proud, but has a chip on=20

shoulder. He is very protective of his sister Maria, and untrusting of=20
anything American. He is a gentleman with the ladies, but cuts through the=20
niceties with the War Council. Must be a strong dancer with strong physical=
=20
presence. Sings opposite Anita in =E2=80=98America=E2=80=99.
Chino A shy, gentle, sweet-faced boy who has just arrived from Puerto Ric=
o=20
to marry Maria, but wants to follow in Bernardo=E2=80=99s footsteps. Must h=
ave=20
small presence, but be able to display both shyness and rage.
Indio The rest of the Sharks. The final number cast will be based on=20
creating a group
