The City of Akron is seeking a Lead artist to complete our instruction team
for the Lock 3 Summer Arts Experience. The program unites professional
artists with artistically inclined students in a joint arts/work readiness
venture similar to the Gallery 37 program based in Chicago. We are
currently seeking a qualified instructor candidate in the following revised
component:

Painting

Applicants should be established professionals with working experience in
their field. Experience with teenage children is preferred.

Salary is negotiable and commensurate with experience.

Since we are under some major time constraints for finding/selecting an
artist. Please respond if you are interested with some general
bio/qualification info and we will set up an interview.

Thanks,
Suzie Graham

Visual Arts:
Painting- Creating Totems- Mentor will lead the students in the exploration
of mythical traditions expressed through the visual arts, specifically the
use of totems. The group will use painting skills with varied media and
surfaces in combination with their own vision of today's totems to create
totems. Individual "warm up" projects to include personal totems, desktop
totems, etc, that will be for sale. Final project will be the re-creation
of existing electrical boxes (possibly- permission pending) as totems along
Main Street using enamel paint. This project will also incorporate a fire
hydrant painting project. Hydrants will be painted with enamel in bright,
visible colors, NOT including the top domes. Specific paint must be used
for this project. End Product: The creation of individual totems and the
re-creation of the electrical boxes and hydrants using paint and found
objects.

This component may only include the hydrant painting project. I am looking
for an artist with some interesting, dynamic ideas for rounding out this
component. If we only have the hydrants, what else can the apprentices do,
paint, and create to express the ideas of myth/totems/etc? I am looking for
some very creative and exciting ideas here. Throw them at me in your
proposals, please.

Lock 3 Summer Arts Experience

Summer 2004

The Lock 3 Summer Arts experience is a program organized through Don
Plusquellic, the Mayor of the City of Akron. The program identifies students
aged 14 to 18 with a demonstrated aptitude for the arts, and partners them
with professional artists who mentor them in the creation of collaborative
works of art. This summer, the program will offer seven components:
Filmmaking and Video, Creative Writing, Theatre Performance, Music
Production and Performance, Painting, Sculpture/Mask Making, and
Fashion/Costume Design. Each of these components will work under the
unified concept of Transforming Myth. Combining research with history and
creativity, each component will create individual and collaborative works of
art. The program integrates work readiness skills with art education by
assisting the students in building resumes, portfolios, working art and
workplace techniques and promoting a workplace environment. Apprentices
(the students) are paid a $400 stipend for their participation in the
program.

Program Details:

Generally, each component should run approximately 5 weeks,
with no more than 6 hours worked by apprentices per day. Total scheduled
working hours for apprentices should be between 80 and 100 hours. Days and
times are somewhat flexible depending upon the requirements of the
component.

The overall program is scheduled to begin June 14 and end
with a closing reception/performance/gallery opening on August 12. Each of
the seven components will be scheduled during that time.

Lead artists are invited to be a part of the interview and
selection process of students (beginning in April).

Artists generally work with 10 apprentices.

The Summer 2004 Summer Arts Experience will carry on the spirit of the
original program with some changes in format and artistic vision. This
year, the seven art components will be unified conceptually under the common
theme of "Transforming Myth". Each component will base its process on the
research and reinterpretation of diverse myths throughout time. Reflecting
diversity, history and creativity, it will be the mission of each instructor
to impart the original myths to their apprentices, and guide them in the
reinterpretation of those myths into their finished projects.

Although much of the Lock 3 activity will still take place downtown, some of
the components include outreach projects, making the Lock 3 Summer Arts
Experience more present in the public eye. Components will take place
throughout the summer, mid June to mid August, with all groups coming
together for the final Gallery Reception and Graduation Ceremony on August
12. Components will be reunited August 28th for a public performance and
exhibit in conjunction with Lock 3 events.

Each component will culminate with a finished product that will be
marketable to corporations or the general public.

PROPOSAL:
Lock 3 Summer Arts Experience

Proposal

Please submit a document with responses numbered to correspond to the items
below.

	1.	Artist Name. If you are an organization, the name of the
responsible party who will accompany the students at all times is required.
	2.	Affiliated Organization (if any)
	3.	Updated resume including contact information, educational
background, professional experience in related field, experience working
with children (include ages), applicable skills and training, three

	4. Component you are interested in Instructing/ Mentoring
	5.	Explanation of how you will achieve the goals required by
the component. Include related projects that you may have completed with
supplemental information (news clippings, photos, programs, etc)
			a.	As you review our program goals for each
component, it is evident that some of the artists leading components will
need to work closely with one another to establish continuity in the
finished product. These meetings, etc will be expected, but you do not need
to include them as part of your production schedule at this time.
	6.	List of additional resources you may use- guest speakers/
demonstrations, equipment, field trips, videos, off site production
technology (kilns, editing, recording equipment, etc)
			a.	You may enlist the support of additional
talent and staff, with approval, but those individuals will not be
contracted by the City, and must never be left exclusively responsible of
the students.
	7.	Explain how you specifically will make this program unique
or exceptional. What is unusual about what you will bring to the program?
	8.	Salary requirement. What is the dollar amount required for
your services to plan, implement and successfully complete the program. Do
not include supply costs in your salary requirement.
	9.	Time requirement. What days and times do you want your
component to take place? Program is slated to begin June 14 and end August
12. Tell us where your component can fit in. Be as flexible as possible,
giving us as much room to move your component around as you can. Give
specifics on the amount of hours required with the apprentices to complete
the projects and what dates/times you are available. If possible, schedule
between 9 and 5:30 M-Th. Fridays and Saturdays are available if necessary.
	10.	Supply Fee. Provide a dollar amount to cover expenses other
than your salary. Be thorough and provide a general list of supplies (you
will be asked to give dollar amounts and specifics if your proposal is
selected).
			a.	Your supply requirement should include bus
trips, equipment rental, and anything outside of tables, chairs, TV/VCR/DVD
and slide projector that you will require. Lock 3 has tables, chairs,
TV/VCR/DVD and slide projector for use, but you must specify when and how
many you require.
			b.	Field trips may be taken off site and are
encouraged to increase the student's exposure to the arts or to professional
working environments. Those field trips with locations should be included
in your proposal under supply fees.
	11.	Site Requirements. The Lock 3 space is a warehouse-like
space that is not divided into classrooms. We would like the progress of
the artwork to be as visible to the public as possible. How much of your
program must be completed indoors, and how much space do you require. If
you can work outdoors in the adjacent park space, do you require a canopy?
How much of your program will be completed off site?
	12.	How many apprentices can you use in your component?

Please submit your proposal by mail or electronically to:
