Imagination/2 is an intensive workshop series for beginning or
just-bogged-down writers who want direction, connection, and a jumpstart.
Covering fiction, poetry, essay, and memoir, it will gear up at eight
greater Cleveland locations over five Saturdays during May and June. From
9:30 am to 12:30 pm on May 1, 8, 15, and 22, experienced writers will guide
participants through the mysteries of genre and craft and workshop technique.
One of the groups is a teen workshop for high-school aged writers. A ninth
location, on the CSU campus, will provide aspiring or just curious
playwrights a four-week workshop of their own. On June 12, all nine groups
will gather at Mather Mansion on the Cleveland State campus to celebrate
with good food, much writer-talk, student readings, and a featured reader,
Cleveland's own Delores Phillips, alumna of CSU, and author of the novel
The Darkest Child.
Workshop locations are: Mac's Backs Books, Joseph Beth Booksellers, the
Parma Ridge and Brecksville Branches of the Cuyahoga County Public Library,
the Rocky River (Metroparks) Nature Center, Kirtland Community of Christ,
Cleveland State's new West Center campus, plus a playwriting workshop in
Cleveland State's Theater Arts Building, and a teen writers session at the
Poets' & Writers' League of Greater Cleveland Literary Center.
Workshop size is limited. To register, call Jane Dugan at (216) 687-2532 or
email Imagination2 at csuohio.edu. Please indicate which location you would
like to attend. Tuition of $69.95 will cover
all 5 sessions (some grant assistance is available).
Sponsored by the Cleveland State University Creative Writing Program with
financial support from the Ohio Arts Council.

Playwriting workshops will be led by Chris Johnston and Sarah Morton.

Two weekends of auditions have been planned for Little Theatre of =
Tuscarawas County's summer production, a revival of the Rodgers and =
Hammerstein classic "The Sound of Music."=20

"The Sound of Music," which is being sponsored by The Times-Reporter, =
will open July 16 for an 11-performance run, closing July 31.=20

The production will be presented under the direction of Rex Huffman of =
New Philadelphia, assisted by Christine Walsh-Newton of Dover. Debra =
Burkhart of Dover is music director and Shelly Beitzel of Dover will =
provide choreography.=20

Auditions for adult roles will be conducted May 9 and 10, beginning each =
night at 7 in Little Theatre at 466 Carrie Ave. NW, New Philadelphia. =
All roles, including those of Maria, Capt. Georg von Trapp, Mother =
Abbess, Baroness Elsa Schrader and Max Detweiler, are available.=20

Adults auditioning will have two options. Those interested in principal =
roles will be asked to sing in an "open" setting for the director, =
assistant director and music director. Those interested in chorus or =
non-singing roles will be permitted to sing during a closed audition.=20

Maria is a soprano with a vocal range of low B to high B-flat. Mother =
Abbess is also a soprano, with a range of low B to high A. The Baroness =
is a mezzo soprano whose range is low C to E. Capt. von Trapp is a =
baritone whose vocal range is low F to E, and Max Detweiler is a =
baritone with a low D to E range.=20

All adults will be asked to read from the script once the vocal =
auditions have concluded.=20

There are a number of cameo roles available, including Sisters Berthe, =
Sophia and Margaretta, Herr Zeller and Admiral von Schreiber. A nuns' =
chorus is also needed, as is a chorus to portray neighbors and friends =
of Capt. von Trapp and German soldiers.=20

Anyone interested in auditioning for the role of Liesl, the eldest von =
Trapp daughter; and Rolf Gruber, her boyfriend, should plan on attending =
one of the adult sessions. Liesl is described in the script as being 16 =
years old, and Rolf is a year older. However, casting of these roles =
will be done by look as well as by age.=20

Auditions for children interested in playing one of the Von Trapp =
children will be held the following weekend, May 15 and 16 at 1 p.m. In =
addition to Liesl, there are six Von Trapp children. They are Friedrich, =
the eldest son described as 14; Kurt, the 10-year-old second son; Gretl, =
the youngest daughter who should look 5 years old; 7-year-old Marta; =
9-year-old Brigitta; and 13-year-old Louisa.=20

Children will not necessarily be cast according to age. It is suggested =
they sing a portion of the song "Do Re Mi" from the show, although this =
is not a requirement.=20

Children will be asked to sing in a closed setting, with parents =
encouraged to observe. After vocal rehearsals have concluded, they will =
be asked to read from the script in groups.=20

An accompanist will be provided for all four audition sessions and taped =
and CD accompaniment is also permitted as long as the accompaniment does =
not contain the vocal track.=20

Anyone with questions about auditions for "The Sound of Music" should =
e-mail auditions15 at yahoo.com.
