Upcoming Performances and Residencies
Watch for news about NWPL's production of Jean Genet's Deathwatch, directed by James Slowiak and featuring Jairo Cuesta and NWPL apprentices Chris Buck and Justin Hale. The play promises to be an intimate and intense experience that demonstrates the company’s unique physical and vocal approach to classic material. Scheduled to premiere: Fall 2004.

Also: La Signora--A new solo piece by NWPL member Debora Totti. The performance functions as a vehicle for the actress to investigate death. The result is a dramatic rendering of songs, dances, and conversation concerning one’s responsibility, as an artist and mother, to tell the truth.
Built from fragments of memory and personal experience, Debora confronts questions about essence and image, fear and submission, maternity and instinct, fam ily, loneliness, and reality. The performance is directed by James Slowiak. Fall 2004.

And...Stairway to Paradise, featuring NWPL apprentice Megan Elk singing from the songbooks of Arlen, Berlin, Gershwin and Weil. With guitarist Kurt Reed. Premiere Fall 2004.

Fall Residency at The University of Akron, September 27-October 10, 2004

Residency in Bogota, Colombia, December 2004 Performance Ecology
Performance Ecology might be looked at as an example of what cultural historian Morris Berman calls the monastic option: embodied knowledge which can serve as a counterweight to the world of schlock, ignorance, social inequality, and mass consumerism. Berman believes that if this embodied knowledge, authentic ways of living, can be preserved and passed down then our cultural heritage may well serve as a seed for a subsequent renaissance, a New Enlightenment. He quotes a haiku by seventeenth-century Japanese poet Basho (which may well serve as a motto for NWPL's work):

Journeying through the world

To and fro, to and fro

Cultivating a small field.
