OBERLIN COLLEGE APPOINTS DAVID STULL
DEAN OF THE CONSERVATORY OF MUSIC

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:	MEDIA CONTACT: Marci Janas
May 21, 2004 440-775-8328//marci.janas at oberlin.edu

OBERLIN, OHIO -- Oberlin College President Nancy S. Dye has appointed David =

H. Stull as Dean of the Oberlin Conservatory of Music, effective July 1,=20
2004. Stull has served as Associate Dean of the Conservatory for four=20
years and Acting Dean of the Conservatory during the spring 2004 sabbatical =

leave of Dean Robert K. Dodson, who will become provost at the New England=20
Conservatory of Music.

"The appointment of David Stull as Dean of the Conservatory is great news=20
for Oberlin, and has been greeted with unanimous enthusiasm and support by=20
Oberlin=92s faculty," says President Dye. "David has a keen understanding =
of=20
Oberlin's unique place as a top-tier music school and the challenges of the =

professional music world. The young musicians who study at Oberlin -- and=20
the artists and scholars who teach here -- will find him to be an excellent =

advocate for their interests and a tireless promoter of their efforts."

Stull brings to his new Oberlin position a wealth of administrative,=20
performance, and teaching experience in music and higher education. During=20
his tenure at Oberlin, he has chaired the Educational Policy Committee for=20
the Conservatory and worked closely with faculty on new initiatives, most=20
recently, the Young Artists and Community Music programs.

Prior to Oberlin, he served as a member of the brass faculty, the Director=20
of Conservatory Admissions, and ultimately as the Assistant Dean of the=20
Lawrence University Conservatory of Music in Appleton, Wisconsin. As=20
Lawrence's Director of Admissions, Stull increased applicants and=20
matriculating students by 60 percent and expanded the school's profile=20
nationally; as Assistant Dean he facilitated the design and implementation=20
of a new curriculum for the Lawrence Conservatory as well as expanded=20
outreach programs for faculty and students. He also cultivated a strong=20
studio of tuba students and coordinated the brass chamber music program, in =

addition to performing with the faculty brass quintet.

Before his tenure at Lawrence, Stull was Associate Director of Admissions=20
at the Juilliard School, overseeing all aspects of the admissions process=20
and serving as liaison for the Juilliard Opera Center and the Barnard,=20
Columbia, Juilliard exchange program. He also served as Director of=20
Residential Life at the Aspen Music Festival from 1992 to 1994.

A tubist, he has performed with the American Brass Quintet, the Milwaukee=20
Ballet, the Bravo Colorado Music Festival, and the Aspen Festival=20
Orchestra, among others. His performances have included appearances in=20
Lincoln Center's Alice Tully Hall, Town Hall, and Merkin Hall in addition=20
to tours throughout the United States and Europe. He has also recorded for=20
commercial radio and television.

Stull has served as a guest speaker at the Interlochen Arts Academy on=20
numerous occasions, has been a competition judge for Midwest Young Artists=20
and for Juilliard's pre-college division, and has appeared on National=20
Public Radio's Performance Today.

A native of Cincinnati, Ohio, Stull studied tuba with Ronald Bishop at the=20
Oberlin Conservatory of Music, obtaining a bachelor of music degree in=20
performance and a bachelor of arts degree in English literature from=20
Oberlin College. He also pursued further study at the Juilliard School in=20
the American Brass Quintet program and holds a master of music degree from=20
the University of Wisconsin at Madison.

In regard to his new appointment, Dean Stull commented: "I am very pleased=20
and honored to undertake the leadership of the Oberlin Conservatory of=20
Music and I look forward to continuing a legacy of excellence that will=20
grow and flourish in the coming years. This is an outstanding community of=20
performing artists and scholars, and I am privileged to be a part of it."

The Oberlin Conservatory of Music, founded in 1865 and situated within the=20
intellectual vitality of Oberlin College since 1867, is the oldest=20
continuously operating conservatory in the United States. It is renowned=20
internationally as a professional music school of the highest caliber.

Primarily an undergraduate conservatory of music, Oberlin provides its 585=20
students with unparalleled individual attention and training from more than =

85 artist-teachers and scholars. Through hundreds of courses in classical=20
and jazz performance, vocal studies, music history and theory, music=20
education, composition and TIMARA (Technology in Music and the Related=20
Arts), Oberlin has prepared many of the music world's notable luminaries=20
for successful careers in all walks of the profession. Oberlin's=20
collaborations with The Cleveland Orchestra support a core element of=20
Oberlin's mission: that professional training and contact with one of the=20
world's great orchestras is seminal to a formal music education.

TrueNorth Cultural Arts

TrueNorth Cultural Arts presents "Sing for the Cure-A Proclamation of =
Hope", a benefit concert supporting the Ireland Cancer Center of =
University Hospitals of Cleveland, with a portion of the proceeds =
benefiting the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. This will be a =
powerful concert for anyone whose life has been touched by cancer; a =
time of inspiration, reflection, connection, affirmation and healing.

The concert is being performed to help raise awareness and to encourage =
patients and their families in the battle against cancer, while =
generating funds for the continued development of Ireland Cancer =
Center's Music Therapy program under the direction of Dr. Deforia Lane.

Dr. Deforia Lane, Ph.D., MT-BC, is the Associate Director of the Ireland =
Cancer Center and Director of Music Therapy. The Music Therapy program =
was developed to minimize the disruption of normal living patterns by =
providing sensitive, creative interventions for patients, including the =
playing of instruments and the writing of songs. The power of music has =
been well-documented: studies have shown that music can influence heart =
rate, respiration, blood pressure, pain perception, physical health and =
well-being. Through her distinguished career, Dr. Lane has brought =
comfort and happiness to individuals suffering from many ailments, =
including cancer, terminal illnesses, and pediatric disorders.

The Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, the nation's largest =
private funder for breast cancer research and community outreach =
programs, commissioned "Sing for the Cure". "Sing" is being performed =
throughout the country raising both awareness and funds and encouraging =
all in the fight against cancer.

In November of 2002, TrueNorth premiered "Sing for the Cure" in this =
area, raising $13,000.00 for the new Woman's Center at Westlake's St. =
John West Shore Hospital.

The concert features the TrueNorth Orchestra and Chorale, under the =
direction of Richard A. Fortney, and will be held Saturday, May 22, 7:30 =
p.m. at the Cuyahoga Community College Main Auditorium, Metro Campus, =
2900 Community College Avenue in Cleveland, on the corner of E 30th and =
Woodland. Secured garage parking is available.

This concert traces a cancer patient's journey, inspiring hope and =
awareness. This 80-minute, 11-movement choral song cycle, complete with =
full orchestral accompaniment, is based on true stories of cancer =
survivors and their families. In addition to the 80+ TrueNorth =
musicians, featured throughout the evening will be various medical staff =
and patients from the Ireland Cancer Center, sharing personal stories. =
The concert promises to be filled with hope, encouragement, beautiful =
music, laughter, tears, and resources in up-to-date cancer research and =
support groups.

TrueNorth Cultural Arts is a multi-disciplinary arts organization =
committed to building and strengthening individuals and the community =
through the performing arts, the visual arts, and the humanities. =
TrueNorth's vision is two-fold: To educate, equip, and empower =
individuals so they can embrace and succeed in the creative arts, and to =
envision and encourage a community where creative arts and art =
appreciation flourish.

Tickets for the concert are $10 and may be purchased by calling (440) =
933-7771, or by visiting the Ireland Cancer Centers, or the TrueNorth =
Gallery, located at 33491 Lake Road in Avon Lake.=20

Further information can be found at the TrueNorth website, =
www.tncarts.org, at the University Hospital website, www.uhhs.com or by =
calling the TrueNorth office at (440) 933-7771.=20
