Shipwrecks are a fascinating yet all too tragic part of shipping on the
Great Lakes. On June 5, at 1 pm on the Discovery Channel, learn about some
of the ships lost and the fate of some of the brave sailors onboard, in
“Shipwrecked: Rage of the Great Lakes.”

One of the shipwrecks featured is that of the SS Daniel J. Morrell, which
sank on November 29, 1966 in Lake Huron. In that fierce November storm,
winds reached 65 mph and waves exceeded 25 feet. With little warning, the
Morrell began to break in half and the bow section sank quickly. Only four
men made it to the life boat. Of her crew of 29 men, Dennis Hale was the
only one to survive. Mr. Hale’s harrowing story is retold with portions of
the documentary filmed onboard the Steamship William G. Mather Museum moored
at Cleveland’s NorthCoast Harbor. Local actors, including Mather crew
member, Matt Grabski, are featured, as well as an interview with Mather
supporter and sole survivor, Dennis Hale.

Similar in design and length to the Morrell, the Mather also weathered many
fierce storms and just a year after the sinking of the Morrell, saved
another ship from disaster in the icy waters of Lake Huron. Visit
www.discovery.com for more on the documentary and additional airings. For
Mather information, go to www.wgmather.org or come aboard for a tour.
