Carousel's CATS Captures Akron's History ... Rebirth

Leave All Other Thoughts of CATS in the Junkyard

=20

Akron, OH - How does a pack of fantastical cats dancing on Carousel's
stage relate to Akron's cultural and civic rebirth?

Take Andrew Lloyd Webber's smash hit, add one award-winning director
with an ingenious idea and a slew of talented artists and business minds
and you've got Carousel Dinner Theatre's production of CATS, debuting
September 1st and runs through November 7, 2004.

=20

Unlike any production seen in Ohio, Carousel's CATS is set in an
abandoned Akron tire factory, which magically comes back to life.
Carousel has decided to take a personal approach to this show -
embracing the history of the companies that Akron was built upon.
Bridgestone-Firestone is one such company who was thrilled with the idea
and allowed Carousel to incorporate branding into the set, with signage
and tires, of course.=20

=20

"Back to life" ... quite a symbolic reference of what the city of Akron
has been living the past few years: a beautiful ballpark, historic
building renovations, fresh restaurants and clubs and soon a new library
and revitalized art museum. A part of Akron and the region for over
three decades, Carousel has gone through many "renovations" itself in
the past two years. With new owners and shows, upgraded menus and staff
additions, including New York import and Artistic Director, Sean
Cercone, Carousel is quickly moving in an exciting direction.

=20

CATS is an example of Carousel's new route to success. This is a
thrilling, progressive production for the professional Akron theatre,
which tried to obtain the rights to the coveted feline fantasy for over
10 years. Wanting to create an experience, an environment, an
interactive event with the show - Carousel embraced the local Akron
angle and took it to great heights, literally. The inventive set,
designed by Robert Kovach, includes scaffolding that flanks either side
of the stage, air-conditioning ducts and catwalks built over theatre
seating. And, it wouldn't be a real tire factory without a rubber roller
and various other equipment that make ideal cat perches. Carousel's
dining room tray jacks will be discarded for more appropriate set pieces
like barrels and tires that will double as prime catnap locations as
well.=20

=20

No need to worry about yawning during this unique CATS production. It's
nothing like Broadway, it's not what you saw on tour. Inspiring,
imaginative and a bit nostalgic, this musical offers more than a climax
with the Jellicle Ball - it's a friendly whisker of local history. When
you walk into Carousel's showroom, you'll know that you're there for
CATS in a very familiar setting - Akron, Ohio - and it's going to be one
show that will be remembered for nine lives.=20
