Actors' Summit Theater announces=20
The opening production of its 2004 -2005 Season

The Guys
      =20
Actors=E2=80=99 Summit announces the opening of its production of the first=20=
major=20
play to address the events of 9/11/2001 =E2=80=93 The Guys, by Anne Nelson.=20=
The play will=20
have a preview performance on Thursday, September 16, and plays through=20
October 3 at Actors=E2=80=99 Summit Theater in downtown Hudson.=20
=20
The Play=20
Less than two weeks after the September 11th attacks, New Yorkers were still=
=20
in shock. One of them, an editor named Joan, received an unexpected phone ca=
ll=20
on behalf of Nick, a fire captain who has lost most of his men in the attack=
.=20
He=E2=80=99s looking for a writer to help him with the eulogies he must pres=
ent at=20
their memorial services. Nick and Joan spend a long afternoon together,=20
recalling the fallen men through recounting their virtues and their foibles,=
 and=20
fashioning the stories into memorials of words. In the process Nick and Joan=
=20
discover the possibilities of friendship in each other and their shared love=
 for the=20
unconquerable spirit of the city. As they make their way through the=20
emotional landscape of grief, they draw on humor, the appreciation of craft=20=
in all its=20
forms, the tango =E2=80=94and the enduring bonds of common humanity.
=20
The Playwright
The Guys is Anne Nelson first play. As a veteran reporter and former war=20
correspondent in El Salvador in the early 1980s, she viewed words and =20
sentences as tools for addressing the issues of her time in hard news and =20
features. Not plays. For Nelson, who is the director of the International =20=
=20
Programs for the Graduate School of Journalism, journalism was as familiar =20=
=20
as city landmarks
                                                 =20
But Nelson came across a story so personal she could only tell it by turning=
=20
to another genre altogether: playwriting. The result is the The Guys, a=20
90-minute play that opened less than two months after the attacks of 9/11. T=
he play=20
is based on Nelson's own interactions with a fire captain. He needed a write=
r=20
to help him write eulogies for eight of his men killed in the attack.=20
=20
The Cast
MaryJo Alexander and A. Neil Thackaberry, the founders of Actors=E2=80=99 Su=
mmit,=20
will play the roles of Joan and Nick respectively. Not only will this be the=
=20
first time that the husband and wife team will have appeared in the same=20
production at Actors=E2=80=99 Summit, it is the first time that they have sh=
ared the stage in=20
thirty years.
=20
"It's strange that, even though we're always working together in the theater=
,=20
we almost never appear on stage in the same play," said Neil. "Either I'll b=
e=20
directing and MaryJo is acting, or I'll be acting and MaryJo is directing."=20
=20
The last time they were in the same show was during their graduate studies a=
t=20
the University of New Orleans. "I played Arial and Neil played Caliban, so w=
e=20
didn't have a lot of scenes together," said MaryJo. The couple has lived in=20
Hudson since 1985.
=20
First Responders
First responders (fire fighters, police officers, and emergency medical=20
personnel) are admitted for half price at all performances. =E2=80=9CSince t=
he play gives=20
us a glimpse into the lives of four of the "ordinary heroes" who went into=20
those burning buildings to save lives, and disappeared, we wanted to make su=
re=20
that the First Responders in our own community have an opportunity to see=20
themselves portrayed on stage,=E2=80=9D said Alexander. =20
=20
Why do this play now? =E2=80=9CIn the three years that have passed since 9/1=
1 we've=20
all been caught up in finger pointing and investigations,=E2=80=9D said Alex=
 Cikra, the=20
director of the production. =E2=80=9CI don't think there's any danger that w=
e'll=20
forget about 9/11. I do think that there is a danger that we'll forget the s=
tories=20
of the everyday heroes who sacrificed their lives for others that morning.=
=E2=80=9D=20
=20
 The Support Team
Alex Cikra, a regular member of the Actors=E2=80=99 Summit acting company, m=
akes his=20
directorial debut at the Hudson theater with The Guys. =E2=80=9CWe=E2=80=99v=
e known Alex for=20
a long time,=E2=80=9D said Thackaberry. =E2=80=9CMaryJo and I both trust him=
 absolutely. He=E2=80=99s=20
a remarkable artist.=E2=80=9D Costumes and props are designed by MaryJo Alex=
ander.  =20
=20
