Ragtime, The Musical Launches the Jewish Community Center's New Arts and=20
Culture Season=20

Tony Award-Winning Musical Previews October 28, 2004
at Cuyahoga Community College Eastern Campus=20
Performing Arts Center

The Jewish Community Center (JCC) of Cleveland launches its new Arts &=20
Culture Season with the Tony Award-winning Ragtime, The Musical, directed by=
 Fred=20
Sternfeld and playing October 28 - November 14 at Cuyahoga Community College=
=20
Eastern Campus Performing Arts Center.=A0 This epic musical is presented by=20=
the JCC=20
in association with Cuyahoga Community College Eastern Campus Theatre Arts.=
=A0=20
The show will preview on Thursday, October 28 at 7:30 p.m.; Opening Night is=
=20
Saturday, October 30 at 8:00 p.m.=20

The theme of this award-winning musical fittingly underscores the JCC's=20
redefined commitment to support, produce and present the arts to the widest=20
possible audiences in Northeast Ohio. This season has been made possible by=20=
a grant=20
from the Green Arts Fund of the Jewish Community Federation of Cleveland and=
 is=20
dedicated to Roe Green.

The JCC is also a recent, proud recipient of a Cuyahoga County Economic=20
Development Grant for its Arts & Culture program.=A0 This funding is provide=
d in part=20
by the generous support of the Cuyahoga County Board of Commissioners: Jimmy=
=20
Dimora, Peter Lawson Jones and Tim McCormack.=A0=20

Ragtime is based on E.L. Doctorow's best-selling novel by the same name with=
=20
book by Terrence McNally, music by Stephen Flaherty and lyrics by Lynn Ahren=
s
.=A0 It paints a powerful portrait of American life through three families:=20=
an=20
upper middle class white family, a socialist immigrant Jewish family and a b=
lack=20
family in Harlem. The musical intertwines three distinct stories that=20
poignantly illustrate history's timeless contradictions of wealth and povert=
y,=20
freedom and prejudice, hope and despair, and love and hate.=A0=20

Set against the backdrop of early Twentieth-century American life, the=20
characters become entangled with real-life characters from the period that i=
nclude=20
Henry Ford, Emma Goldman, Booker T. Washington, Harry Houdini and Evelyn=20
Nesbit. Ragtime's diverse score draws upon traditional Jewish folk sounds,=20
vaudeville's outrageous style and one of black America's most vital genres -=
- an early=20
form of jazz known as "ragtime."

Ragtime won the 1998 Tony awards for best score, book and orchestra and=20
features such show-stopping songs like "Getting Ready Rag", "Your Daddy's So=
n",=20
"Wheels of a Dream" and the title song, "Ragtime".=20

Reflecting the disparate notes and influences that come together to form=20
ragtime music, the show paints a portrait of America as an all-embracing fam=
ily=20
made up of people of different races, nationalities and creeds.=A0 Flawed an=
d=20
struggling to find its way, this family embarks on a journey that can be as=20=
jagged=20
as the rhythms of ragtime, but also as liltingly melodic.=20

"Ragtime is one of the truly great musicals written in the last ten years an=
d=20
I feel pleased and privileged to be working with an outstanding staff and=20
cast to present this wonderful show to the community," said JCC interim arti=
stic=20
director and Ragtime director Fred Sternfeld.=A0 "Ragtime is relevant to=20
contemporary audiences because in many significant ways we, as a society, ha=
ven't=20
changed that much from one hundred years ago. Racial tension and social uphe=
aval=20
still affect us. And just as the industrial revolution affected all aspects=20=
of=20
American life in the early 1900's, technological improvements today continue=
=20
to change the way we live our lives," added Sternfeld.=A0 "Most importantly,=
 the=20
story of Ragtime is a deeply moving and humorous portrayal of how we attempt=
=20
to improve our lives, pursue the American dream and connect with each other=20=
as=20
fellow humans."=A0 Some of award-winning director Fred Sternfeld's recent=20
musicals were the critically acclaimed productions of Fiddler on the Roof at=
 Cain=20
Park and Man of La Mancha at the JCC.

With a cast of over 50 actors and a sizable orchestra and crew, this major=20
musical production required a large venue and Cuyahoga Community College Eas=
tern=20
Campus Performing Arts Center in Highland Hills met the need. This 600-seat,=
=20
state-of-the-art facility, opened in 1998, is located just five minutes from=
=20
the Mandel-JCC and is easily accessible just off the I-271 / Harvard exit. "=
We=20
are pleased to be presenting Ragtime in association with Tri-C's Eastern=20
Campus Theatre Arts.=A0 The administrators and staff have been working with=20=
us in the=20
best spirit of collaboration and have been enormously helpful and supportive=
=20
of this large undertaking," states Sternfeld.

The strong cast includes native-Clevelander Marc Moritz in the role of=20
Tateh.=A0 Notably, Marc was in the original Broadway production of Merrily W=
e Roll=20
Along, by Stephen Sondheim. Other featured actors include Kyle Primous as=20
Coalhouse Walker Jr., Yolanda Christine Davis as Sarah, Maggie Stahl Wirfel=20=
as=20
Mother, Matthew Wright as Father, Sean Szaller as Mother's Younger Brother a=
nd Emma=20
Wahl and Chris McCarrell as the little girl and little boy.

Set designer Richard Gould has created a stunning multi-leveled set evoking=20
the images and environment of early twentieth-century America as seen throug=
h=20
the eyes of the show's narrator, the little boy.=A0 Choreography is by Marti=
n=20
Cespedes and musical direction is by David Williams. The costumes are design=
ed by=20
Dana Romeo, lighting is by Colleen Dowling, sound effects and projections ar=
e=20
by Richard Ingraham and the Houdini illusions will be staged by magic=20
consultant Vincent Polowy.=20

The performance schedule for Ragtime is Thursdays and Sundays at 7:30 p.m.,=20
Saturdays at 8:00 p.m. and Sunday matinees at 2:00 p.m.=A0 Ticket prices are=
 $24=20
for general public; $20 for JCC members; $22 for seniors and $16 for groups=20=
of=20
10 or more.=A0 A special "preview" price of $12 is available for the Thursda=
y,=20
October 28 performance.=A0 A discount package for all five performing arts=20
events of the 2004-05 season is available for $90 for the general public and=
 $80=20
for JCC members.=20

To charge tickets by phone call the JCC Box Office at (216) 382-4000 ext.=20

 of the=20
Tri-C Eastern Campus Performing Arts Center, 4250 Richmond Road, Highland=20
