Halpern's poems, Paper Bridges: Selected Poems of Kadya Molodowsky, and Jewi=
sh=20

ity=20

s=20
now coordinator of the Policy Forum at Teachers College, Columbia University
=20
The Show
    Dorothy and Reuben Silver drew on a rich legacy of work by American=20
Jewish writers, mainly humorists, to create Laughter in 3 Languages, a colle=
ction=20
of stories that recount the joys and sorrows of learning new customs, a new=20
language and all the other mysteries of a new land. The immigrants of the ta=
les=20
are Jewish, but the humor and pathos that unfold demonstrate the universalit=
y=20
of the immigrant experience. The vignettes are performed simultaneously in=20
English and Yiddish, so the material is easy to understand as it entertains.=
=20
Occasionally, the Silvers will employ =E2=80=9CYinglish,=E2=80=9D that immig=
rant blend of the=20
mother tongue and English.
    "It's fun and it works,=E2=80=9D Dorothy says of the presentation, to wh=
ich=20
Reuben adds, =E2=80=9CMost American Jews today don=E2=80=99t understand Yidd=
ish, but they love it.=E2=80=9D
 So, the Silvers are finding, do non-Jewish audiences. When first performed=20
in 2002 -- as a benefit for the Ensemble Theatre in Cleveland -- Laughter in=
 3=20
Languages played to four sell-out crowds. The Actors=E2=80=99 Summit product=
ion comes=20
in the second month of a yearlong celebration of the 350th anniversary of th=
e=20
arrival of the first permanent Jewish settlers in New Amsterdam (Sept. 12,=20
1654) and, coincidentally, 150 years after the arrival of the first Jewish=20
settlers in Akron. In 1865, this latter group, 20 strong, organized the Akro=
n Hebrew=20
Association, which has been known as Temple Israel since 1911.
=20
