I'm not sure of the origins of the phrase, "break a leg" and those that =
have been offered on this list all seem very plausible.

The folks at North Ridgeville probably know some folks at Brecksville =
Little Theatre who started using "merde" because several of us have =
actually broken a leg, or in my case the calcaneuos, while either =
performing or working on stage.=20

We may not have originated the use of "merde" but I believe we use it =
because it is less painful albeit more embarrassing.=20

Maybe we should change it to "sneeze!"
