Re: Karamu Performing Arts Theater presents Stonewall Jackson's House =
by Jonathan Reynolds
Cleveland, Ohio's Karamu Performing Arts Theatre, Ohio's premier =
African-American theatre, presents the second production of its' =
2004/2005 Season of Knocking Down Walls: PAIN, PRIDE, PREJUDICE...and =
Stereotypes with Stonewall Jackson's House by Jonathan Reynolds.
Sensitive subjects surface in this controversial yet funny play by =
Jonathan Reynolds. A woebegone black guide, leading a group through the =
haphazardly restored home of Confederate General Stonewall Jackson, =
suddenly stops the tour to ask a well-to-do white couple from Ohio if =
she can come home with them as their slave. Affirmative action, =
political correctness, nontraditional casting, the welfare state, black =
studies, ethnocentrism, multiculturalism: Mr. Reynolds pushes many =
buttons. You don't have to agree with Mr. Reynolds' inexhaustible =
supply of opinions to get a kick out of this play.
Two of the newest artist to Karamu who recently graced the stage in the =
hit "for colored girls..." have been cast in Stonewall Jackson's House. =
The talented and graceful Kimberly Brown (Lady in Orange) plays =
"Lawanda", the tour guide and the young gifted Corene Woodford (Lady in =
Green) was recently cast as her understudy. Additional newcomers to the =
Karamu stage performing in this play are David Duffield, Kate Duffield, =
Susan Lucier and Timothy Squirek. Hassan Rogers who directed the Arena =
hits Riff Raff and No Niggers, No Jews, No Dogs directs the play. =20
Karamu continues "A Moment with the MU" on Monday, October 25, 2004 =
from 1 pm to 2:30 pm prior to Opening Night in the Concert Hall. Meet =
the cast, designers and directors of the show, where you can feel free =
to get up close and personal about their processes with the production =
before opening night. Free to the public and media with Guest Moderators
