Canton, Ohio - The Players Guild of Canton is excited to announce the winner=
=20
of the first High School Shakespeare Festival Design Contest. The contest wa=
s=20
held to secure a winning design from a high school student for the Festival=
=E2=80=99s=20
upcoming production of Romeo and Juliet. After sending letters to high schoo=
ls=20
in Staerk and surrounding counties announcing the Festival and the=20
competition, a set of detailed specs were sent to those students who applied=
 to enter=20
the competition. Participants were required to draw renderings and build mod=
els=20
of their designed set for presentation at the finals of the competition whic=
h=20
were held on December 18, 2004. The winning design will be used to build the=
=20
set for the Festival production.

Judges for the competition were Jason King Jones, the professional=20
Shakespeare director from Jersey City, New Jersey who will be directing Rome=
o and=20
Juliet, Steven Arnold, the Players Guild=E2=80=99s Artistic Coordinator, Jos=
h Erichsen, the=20
Guild=E2=80=99s Production Designer, Romeo and Juliet=E2=80=99s Fight Choreo=
grapher Brian=20
Walsh and Mike Labriola, an administrator for Plain Local Schools.

The winner of the Design Contest is George Maxin, IV. He is a senior at=20
Louisville High School. George has onstage and backstage experience both at=20=
his=20
high school and at the Players Guild. George=E2=80=99s winning design is a t=
wo-story set=20
that utilizes both movable components and flown scenic pieces to suggest the=
=20
various locations within the play. As the winner of the competition, he will=
=20
work with the Guild=E2=80=99s Production Designer, Joshua Erichsen, to tailo=
r the set to=20
the Players Guild=E2=80=99s Main Stage space. He will then work with the Gui=
ld=E2=80=99s=20
Technical Director, Joe Carmola, to supervise the high school cast and crew=20
participants to construct the set for its use in the show. George has also b=
een=20
cast in Romeo and Juliet in the role of Tybalt. George plans to attend colle=
ge in=20
the fall as a theatre major concentrating in Scenic Design.
