Premiere Solo Exhibition

Toward the Light - Meditations on Nature

The Beck Center for the Arts

Cleveland, Ohio - The Beck Center for the Arts presents an exhibit for
the mind and spirit entitled Toward the Light - Meditations on Nature
inspired by Gary Engle, on display beginning January 21 through February
27 at The Beck Center for the Arts.

Gary Engle is an emerging, self-taught artist living in Cleveland, Ohio.
His portfolio includes black & white fine art photography, photographic
composites and abstract patterns of stitching. The heart of his
portfolio consists of nature images that lean toward abstract
expression.

Engle's composites consist of four prints of the same image, two printed
positive, and two with the negative reversed (physically turned over in
the film carrier). The images are then arranged either radially
symmetrically, or symmetrically side-by-side, to create abstract,
meditative works that have the qualities of a mandala. =20

"Photographing nature is a spiritual practice for me," says Engle. "I
try to place myself in a receptive frame of mind as I walk through a
landscape meandering and observing until I feel drawn toward the light.
As such, I often find that I am shooting into the sun or its
reflections. Rarely do I see the image I am photographing until it
emerges in the printing process."

"I am most intrigued by photographing light as it illuminates nature -
not so much recording a beautiful stream or leaf, but photographing
light as it may find expression in wetlands, on a branch or a rock. By
creating images of the natural environment that are less accessible,
subtler and not obvious, I hope to create photographs for rest,
reflection and meditation."

Gary Engle's photography collection is prominently displayed in Pfizer
Corporate Headquarters and in numerous private collections. Previous
exhibits include Littlest Heroes Juried Art Exhibition, Thrive - an
artspace Summer HOT Show and Free Times Juried Show all in Cleveland,
Ohio. Future shows are scheduled for the Cleveland Botanical Garden,
South Wing Gallery at St. Paul's Church in Cleveland Heights and Kismet
Gallery in Westport, Connecticut. =20
