Arts Camp
 <http://www.fredsternfeld.com/> Fred Sternfeld, camp director

This is the first in a series of releases highlighting our staff, guest
artists and programs !

Joining us this summer to lead a workshop is guest artist Joan
Ellison...

Joan Ellison

performed her first professional opera role at the age of sixteen -
Flora in Britten's The Turn of the Screw, with the Des Moines Metro
Opera. The following year, she entered Oberlin Conservatory of Music,
where she went on to earn a Bachelor of Music degree in voice
performance and a Master of Music in teaching. In the years since then,
however, she has happily returned to her first love: musical theatre.
Most recently, Joan appeared as Julie Jordan in Carousel at Kalliope
Stage. Other local appearances include Rapunzel in Into the Woods at
Cain Park (directed by Victoria Bussert) and the Lynne Winterstellar
track in the Rodgers and Hammerstein revue, A Grand Night for Singing
(Kalliope Stage). In February, she'll make her Severance Hall debut
opposite Broadway baritone William Michals in the Cleveland Pops
Orchestra's concert, "To Broadway with Love." With her husband, Mark
Flanders, Joan co-created a musical revue of American popular songs of
the 1930s and '40s, Circa 1939, which they have been performing since
1997 in northeast Ohio, Minneapolis, and New York City on concert and
cabaret series and for private events. Local performances have included
Cain Park's cabaret series and the gala re-opening of the Silver Grille.
By day, Joan is an adjunct professor of voice in Baldwin-Wallace
Conservatory's renowned musical theatre program. She has music-directed
25 theatrical productions in greater Cleveland and Minneapolis, served
as vocal coach for the recent production of Private Lives at Great Lakes
Theatre Festival, and was the musical supervisor for Kalliope Stage's
inaugural season. Before coming to Baldwin-Wallace, Joan served as an
adjunct faculty member at Oberlin Conservatory. She also maintains a
small private voice studio.

Joan Ellison is a proponent of "human-compatible learning" based on
current neuropsychobiological research into how human beings learn new
skills. She is also a passionate practitioner of science-based voice
education, which began with her studies at Oberlin Conservatory and
continued through three years of private study in belted singing and
pedagogy with internationally-known voice educator Leon Thurman,
principal author of Bodymind and Voice. With a science-based approach,
vocal technique is demystified and can be approached systematically, as
a set of skills to be mastered and muscles and tissues to be
conditioned. Says Joan, "I believe that teaching vocal skills in a way
that is informed by the latest scientific research on how the voice
works and how people learn is the most effective way to reach my goal:
to train singing actors who have full expressive command of their
instruments. Solving the technical problems results in singers who have
all possible colors in their vocal paintbox at their immediate disposal
with nothing standing in the way of their direct artistic expression."
In addition to her classical training, Joan brings to the table a
strong grounding in musical theatre vocal styles and how to produce them
efficiently enough to sing eight shows a week. She is also a highly
skilled accompanist, beginning her piano studies at the age of four and
continuing through her years at Oberlin with Robert McDonald
(accompanist of Midori and Isaac Stern and now a professor at
Juilliard).

FAIRMOUNT PERFORMING ARTS CAMP

The program: FPAC is an advanced program for young people (grades 4-12
and college students) with professional aspirations. It includes
training in Musical Theatre, Contemporary Theatre and Shakespeare.
Students will receive training in all three genres, but may pick an
"emphasis" if they so desire. The program covers scene study, voice,
movement, dance, improvisation, audition techniques, speaking verse,
script analysis, voice for the stage, movement, stage combat and the
system of physical action developed by Constantin Stanislavski. As an
added bonus, a series of classes and workshops will be held during the
session that will prepare our older, interested students for
professional auditions and the college theatre program application
process. A showcase production of Contemporary, Musical Theatre &
Shakespeare scenes will be performed at the end of the session for
parents, friends and invited area college educators and theatre
professionals.

All new students and 2004 FPAC Production Workshop students are required
to audition for the camp.

Returning students from the 2004 FPAC Professional Training Intensive do
NOT need to audition and may register now.

Call 440-338-3171 now to set up an audition time or to register!

Auditions:
Saturday, January 22 at Laurel School from 1:00pm -- 5:00pm
Sunday, January 23 at Fairmount Center from 2:00pm -- 6:00pm

New for 2005: New location - Laurel School in Shaker Heights
Expanded ages by popular request -- 4-12 grade, AND all college students

Feedback from our students and parents:

"We fully expected Fairmount Performing Arts Camp to be fantastic, under
the leadership of Fred Sternfeld and his talented staff. However, our
daughter's experience far exceeded our expectations. She attended master
classes led by some of NE Ohio's top directors and actors, which taught
her new techniques for auditions and performance. In addition to the
theater classes, the campers really enjoyed the "traditional" camp
activities in a beautiful setting. She could not wait to get to camp
every morning. The campers formed such strong bonds over the 3 week
session that their goodbyes on the last day were full of tears and
emotions."

Dear Fred,
I wanted to thank you so much for the wonderful experience I had at
camp. I'm so thrilled I got to work with some of the most talented
teachers and actors in Cleveland. I feel I have grown so much as an
actress, and thanks to you, CP, Alicia, Doug, Heidi and Sean I now have
a "tool box" that I can use for the rest of my life. After having the
audition workshop with CP, I now feel prepared to walk into any audition
and know all of the right things to do. Also, through scene study class
I learned so much about not judging your character and making strong
choices which are both important skills that I can use for any character
I ever play. Not only did I learn a lot, but I also made some of my best
friends at camp. I went into camp knowing only a few people and came out
with 30 close friends who I can depend on and talk to about anything. I
wish I was able participate in more than just one session, because these
past three weeks have been an incredible experience that I will remember
forever.

Sincerely,
Jane Larson

Dear Fred,

This past summer at Fairmount Performing Arts Camp was a wonderful
experience and I thank you so much! Now that I have been in college for
a semester, I am realizing just how valuable the acting training was at
FPAC. I am finding that camp has prepared me more for a career in
theatre than many of my college classes have. FPAC took time to
critique each individual student in a supportive, nurturing environment.
My college program has neglected to teach many of the character
development concepts and the idea of "behaving truthfully and naturally"
as opposed to "acting." I feel so honored to have gotten the
opportunity to work with numerous area professionals last summer, as
opposed to the same one or two teachers that are common in the college
setting. Looking back, I know I really would have missed out had I not
participated in FPAC last summer, and I certainly wouldn't be where I am
now in terms of my acting capabilities. I think that FPAC is certainly
valuable for any college student who wishes to pursue a career in
theatre.
