GRADUATE FIRST
PASSE TON BAC D'ABORD
France, 1978, Maurice Pialat
Thursday, January 20, at 7:00 pm
High school students bored stiff, out of work and no future are seen in
this rough-and-tumble tale as they spend their days drinking, drifting,
having sex, and wasting time in a small northern French mining town, a
real rough-hewn tale and penetrating look at French youth in 1978. The
non professional cast are exceptional! Whoever said that Dumont (THE
LIFE OF JESUS) was the first to depict northern French kids in their own
environment? New 35mm print. Subtitles. 85 min.

handsome Asian action movie, set along the Silk Road in the middle of

DAYS OF BEING WILD
A FEI JING JUEN
Hong Kong, 1991, Wong Kar-wai
Friday, January 21, at 9:35 pm
Saturday, January 22, at 6:30 pm
Sunday, January 23, at 4:15 pm
A MUST SEE! Maggie Cheung and the late Leslie Cheung star in Wong
Kar-wai's breakthrough second film, which is only now being released
commercially in the U.S. Set in 1960's Hong Kong, the movie centers
around an affluent, amoral young man who loves and leaves a variety of
women on his way to the Philippines, where his mother lives. But, as
fans of Wong's later IN THE MOOD FOR LOVE know, the story is just a
pretext for the director's swooningly beautiful camera style, which
conveys the characters' unspoken longings and thwarted desires with
intoxicating colors, textures and rhythms. New 35mm print! "A
rapturous films about cool men, hot women and the thousand and one
nights and cigarettes they share...(Wong's) first undisputed triumph."
- The NY Times. Cleveland revival premiere! Subtitles. 94 min.

A Special Event! Romeo Carey Presents
THE WORLD'S GREATEST SINNER
USA, 1962, Timothy Carey
Saturday, January 22, at 8:30 pm
Here's one of the truly legendary and bizarre underground cult movies of
all time! (It even has music composed by Frank Zappa). THE WOLRD'S
GREATEST SINNER was the only feature written and directed by longtime
character actor Timothy Carey (1925-1994), a hulking, highly
recognizable, horse-faced goon best known for his small but indelible
roles in Kubrick's THE KILLING and PATHS OF GLORY. (He also appeared in
THE WILD ONE and ONE-EYED JACKS with Brando, EAST OF EDEN with James
Dean, CHANGE OF HABIT with Elvis, HEAD with the Monkees, and two John
Cassavetes movies.) A legendary loose cannon in real life, Carey
brought the same manic energy and anarchic attitude to THE WOLRD'S
GREATEST SINNER. Carey plays a middle-aged SoCal insurance salesman who
chucks his job, changes his name to "God", preaches that everybody has
eternal life within them, turns messianic rock'n'roll star, and
eventually runs for President. It's an amazing spectacle - raw, sleazy,
tasteless, subversive, blasphemous, prophetic - and it comes to us
courtesy of Romeo Carey, the director's son, who will hand-deliver the
sole 35mm print and talk about his dad at the screening. Cleveland
premiere. 35mm. 82 min. See next blurb for another Timothy Carey rarity!

A Special Event! Romeo Carey Presents
TWEET'S LADIES OF PASADENA
USA, 1972, Timothy Carey
Saturday, January 22, at 10:15 pm
Although THE WORLD'S GREATEST SINNER is the only movie directed by
bizarro character actor Timothy Carey, Carey spent a lot of time between
the late 1960's and the early 1980's shooting color footage for an
intended TV series entitled TWEET'S LADIES OF PASADENA. Carey played
Tweet Twig, a born loser who can't keep a job but is adopted by the
little old ladies of a local knitting society intent on clothing
animals. He is married to a 300-lb. former female wrestler and roller
skates everywhere he goes. Carey's concept proved too weird for network
television but viewed today, it prefigures the tacky, tasteless excesses
of John Waters. Romeo Carey will present a 70-min. work print of this
unrealized project), as well as a short documentary about his father.
Cleveland premiere! DVD. Total 90 min.

UNDER THE SUN OF SATAN
SOUS LE SOLEIL DE SATAN
France, 1987, Maurice Pialat
Sunday, January 23, at 7:00 pm
Gerard Depardieu, Sandrine Bonnaire, and Maurice Pialat star in this
major Pialat film that won the Palme d'Or (top prize) at the Cannes Film
Festival. Based on a novel by George Bernanos, it's a stark drama of
evil and divine grace in which an ascetic priest believes that a young
murderess is possessed by the Devil. Great performances! New 35mm
print. Subtitles. 98 min.

Classics Illustrated
Sheldon Wigod Introduces
THE MAGNIFICENT AMBERSONS
USA, 1942, Orson Welles
Monday, January 24, at 7:00 pm
Dr. Sheldon Wigod, former operator of the lamented New Mayfield
Repertory Cinema in Little Italy, kicks off a new bi-weekly series of
classic films and commentary. Wigod will introduce and lead a
discussion after Orson Welles' second film, which some critics rate
higher than his debut, CITIZEN KANE. Based on a Booth Tarkinton novel
and containing Wigod's favorite movie moment of all time, THE
MAGNIFICENT AMBERSONS is a poignant and sublimely beautiful chronicle of
the decline of a great Midwestern family at the turn of the 20th
century, the time of the advent of automobiles. With Tim Holt, Joseph
Cotton, Dolores Costello, Anne Baxter, and Agnes Moorehead; music by
Bernard Herrmann. New 35mm print! 88 min. Special admission $10,
Cinematheque members & CIA staff $7; students with I.D. $5; no passes.

A Special Event! Sut Jhally Presents
WRESTLING WITH MANHOOD:
BOYS, BULLYING & BATTENING
USA, 2002, Sut Jhally, Jackson Katz
Tuesday, January 25, at 7:00 pm
Sut Jhally, the Massachusetts educator and filmmaker whose 1991
videotape DREAMWORLDS: DESIRE/SEX/POWER IN MUSIC VIDEOS got him in hot
water with MTV, appears in person tonight to show and discuss his latest
provocation. WRESTLING WITH MANHOOD looks at the enormous popularity of
professional wrestling and argues that this form of "entertainment"
might breed homophobia and an inclination for sexual assault and
relationship violence in impressionable young men. We will show the
uncut version of Jhally's video (which contains sex and violence), so
viewer discretion is advised. Co-sponsored by The Center for Women at
Case and Cleveland Area Men's Violence Prevention Task Force; special
thanks to Ginnette Boyarko and Dorothy Miller of Case. Students with
I.D. $5; Case/CIA/CIM students free. www.mediaed.org
