A very good point was made by my dear, sweet friend, Evie Morris. Evie =
said that the process of joining AFTRA (American Federation of =
Television & Radio Artists) or SAG (Screen Actors Guild) seems =
difficult, intimidating and mysterious. If learning about AFTRA or SAG =
seems a mysterious and intimidating experience, I hope that you soon =
learn that it is not. =20

It may not be the road you eventually take, but please take the time to =
learn about what your options are. Like anything else, it is all much =
less intimidating once you learn more. =20

I would encourage anyone who wants to know more about AFTRA & SAG to =
call Cathy Nowlin (FYI- Terri Taylor is no longer there) at the local =
AFTRA office at 216-781-2255. She is a wonderful, friendly and very =
knowledgeable AFTRA Executive Director who is a better advocate for =
actors than my own mother! =20

I hope you will all aspire to being paid for your time and talent in the =
future. With or without a union or experience.

In Solidarity with ALL talent-

    Jean,
       Although I agree with the writer, I am speaking to you, =
personally, for the inexperienced (me), nonprofessional (thus far) who =
has no idea how to joing SAG, AFTRA......EQUITY, etc and who is =
intimidated by the whole process, which SEEMS very difficult and =
mysterious.
        I did 2 commercials for Channel 19 without even thinking about =
getting paid because I cannot afford classes to learn all of this. My =
sole purpose was to get a copy of the commercial so I would be able to =
use it as an audition piece for a real paying gig, as well as get the =
experience.
      In Musical Theater, where I DO have experience, it is not uncommon =
for musicians to accept a pit position or even a Musical Director job to =
get experience and build a resume. If they cannot afford four years of =
schooling at Berklee or CIM or CSU OR if they came through the trenches, =
like I did, when no one ever conceived of a woman being a" Musical =
Director" there was no career niche or guidelines for them to follow. =
They (we) charted our own course.
       Although I am a strong believer in unions for any profession ( it =
is a genetic predisposition,)
     I also feel I need to advocate for the inexperienced who may be =
trying to see if they have any ability, talent or desire to pursue a =
career in film or television.
       I also agree that advertisers, while looking at their borttom =
line, need to hear what the professional acting community is saying and =
recognize their culpability in this.
       In all honesty, I never intended to make a career of doing free =
commercials. For me it was a means to an end, to get a professionally =
done tape I could use, to see what I looked like, sounded like, etc.=20
         If I offended you or any other professionals that I have worked =
with over the years, please accept my sincere apology, but my motivation =
never meant to take work from anyone. Never even thought about it from =
that angle.
                                                                         =
          Shalom and love,  Evie

    Jean Zarzour <lipschtick at lipschtick.com> wrote:
      To Shelly: Thanks for speaking up. Every time I see a request for =
actors who will do commercials for "NO PAY" it makes my skin crawl and =
like you, I wonder when the advertiser will be offering their services =
"NO PAY". Unfortunately, until every actor, whether aspiring or part =
time, joins a professional union, we will always been an open target =
for any opportunist advertiser to take advantage of..... and there will =
always be inexperienced actors who will do anything to get face time on =
camera. Hence the ongoing problem. And I do see it as an old and =
ongoing problem. Until Fred started this service, the offenders were =
doing the same sort of business, they just didn't have a public venue =
like this one.=20

      I almost don't blame the actor who hasn't yet assessed their own =
worth or the lay-person who just wants to be in a commercial before they =
die, but I do blame the greedy, opportunists who place the ads. I don't =
care what political, moral or constitutional slant you put on it......to =
the professional actor, it just plain sucks!=20

      To the Advertisers: I realize that even if you knew that there =
were over 400 professional, experienced actors locally who could really =
use "paying" gigs, it wouldn't matter, you'd still take advantage of our =
less experienced or non-union community. I just wish that you knew how =
much dangling the "you can be on tv" carrot compromises an already =
vulnerable profession. And "free enterprise" aside, what a slap in the =
face it is to anyone who you might ask to put in any time and talent =
toward your effort. =20

      To the actors who would work for "NO PAY": Even though I am a =
staunch union member, and would love nothing more than to see you all =
join the unions, I have nothing against non-union actors who choose to =
work by non-union pay standards......I just hate to see that there are =
still people who don't have those standards in place. The actor who =
agrees to work for free not only loses a decent wage, but also any hope =
for residuals (see sag.org or aftra.org for info on commercial =
residuals) or the health and retirement benefits associated with =
working as a union member. Even if you do get paid, you lose on all =
commercial talent deals outside of AFTRA or SAG jurisdiction. Even if =
you stay non-union......PLEASE CHARGE A UNION SESSION RATE!! It sends =
a message that actors, of any kind, are worthy people too. Otherwis e =
you undermine ALL of our worth.

      I hope that everyone reads your email Shelly. The heading may not =
best represent the seriousness or intention of the content. So I hope =
you'll re-label the subject line. It's about time someone at least =
"vented" as you did, even if there isn't a damn thing we can do about =
it. =20

      In solidarity-

        O.K., I've had it. I've been quiet about this issue long enough.
        I would like to know, in what other profession do people get =
asked to WORK for NO PAY? If you know of any doctors, lawyers, plumbers, =
electricians, garbage men..... who will work for me for FREE, will you =
please let me know? My life would be a whole lot easier.
        Whenever good actors give their talent away to the business =
world, you are hurting all of us. I am talking about people who are =
Making Money using your image, and your hard earned talent.
        If a business, that makes money, wants to advertise on TV in =
order to make more money for themselves, why on earth would you give =
away your service to them??? Will they give you their service or product =
for free??
        If real actors would refuse to work for free, then maybe in =
order to get good talent, these advertisers would actually offer us some =
money!!! Duh - it's the old rule of supply and demand. It's bad enough =
that so many of you will do non - union work.
        By the way, of course I am not talking about the artistic =
exercise of movie making or theater. We all do movie projects with our =
fellows for the good of all of us.
        I'm talking about being disrespected and USED.
                                                                         =

    <DIV>   Although I agree with the writer, I am speaking to =
you,=20
    personally, for the inexperienced (me), nonprofessional (thus far) =
who has=20
    no idea how to joing SAG, AFTRA......EQUITY, etc and who is =
intimidated by=20
    the whole process, which SEEMS very difficult and mysterious.</DIV>
    <DIV>    I did 2 commercials for Channel 19 without =
even=20
    thinking about getting paid because I cannot afford classes to =
learn=20
    all of this. My sole purpose was to get a copy of the commercial so =
I would=20
    be able to use it as an audition piece for a real paying gig, as =
well as get=20
    the experience.</DIV>
    <DIV>  In Musical Theater, where I DO have experience, it is =
not=20
    uncommon for musicians to accept a pit position or even a Musical =
Director=20
    job to get experience and build a resume. If they cannot afford four =
years=20
    of schooling at Berklee or CIM or CSU OR if they came through the =
trenches,=20
    like I did, when no one ever conceived of a woman being a" Musical =
Director"=20
    there was no career niche or guidelines for them to follow. They =
(we)=20
    charted our own course.</DIV>
    <DIV>   Although I am a strong believer in unions for any=20
    profession ( it is a genetic predisposition,)</DIV>
    <DIV> I also feel I need to advocate for the inexperienced who =
may be=20
    trying to see if they have any ability, talent or desire to pursue a =
career=20
    in film or television.</DIV>
    <DIV>   I also agree that advertisers, while looking at =
their=20
    borttom line, need to hear what the professional acting community is =
saying=20
    and recognize their culpability in this.</DIV>
    <DIV>   In all honesty, I never intended to make a career =
of doing=20
    free commercials. For me it was a means to an end, to get a =
professionally=20
    done tape I could use, to see what I looked like, sounded like, etc. =
</DIV>
    <DIV>     If I offended you or any other =
professionals=20
    that I have worked with over the years, please accept my sincere =
apology,=20
    but my motivation never meant to take work from anyone. Never even =
thought=20
    about it from that angle.</DIV>

Thanks for=20

      commercials for "NO PAY" it makes my skin crawl and like you, I =
wonder=20

PAY". =20
       Unfortunately, until every actor, whether aspiring or =
part=20

open=20

actors who will=20
      do anything to get face time on camera.  Hence the ongoing=20
