To Evie.
Did you get a copy of the commercials that you did?
Unless you did a speaking part, ad agencies wouldn't want to see it, anyway.
Did channel 19 ever ask you back for a paying job?
Don't you wonder why a TV station has to use free talent? Here's the answer:
They don't do it because they have to, they do it because they CAN.
A better way to get on camera experience is to help out with a local film
maker. Go to a shoot. Be an extra. Or audition for a part. Doing free work for
an artist making an independent film can be very rewarding, and a good way to
make friends in the industry.
Whenever you audition for a real commercial job, it is all about the way you
look (do you fit the part) and your talent at the audition.
Non - Union paying jobs can be good for getting experience and building your
resume. But, you should aspire to be in the union. For the most part,
directors who hire non - union know that they will be getting less experienced
actors and crew. That's why us union people can spot a non union spot a mile away.
You can always stop in at our AFTRA/SAG office. Cathy and Terri would be
happy to chat with you and take the "mystery" out of it. Or grab a copy of the
AFTRA guide and call any of us if you have any questions.
Doing those free jobs doesn't do much for you, although it does make you
more comfortable in front of the camera when you do get a real job.
Use discretion when doing jobs for free. You should always be getting more
out of it than is being taken from you.
                                                                  -Shelly
