THE OBERLIN CONSERVATORY OF MUSIC APPOINTS ANDREA KALYN
ASSOCIATE DEAN FOR ACADEMIC AFFAIRS
OBERLIN, OHIO -- Dean of the Oberlin Conservatory of Music David H. Stull=20
has appointed Andrea Kalyn as associate dean of the conservatory for=20
academic affairs, effective January 4, 2005. Kalyn joins Oberlin after=20
serving four years as assistant dean and musicologist at the North Carolina =
School of the Arts.
"Andrea brings a wealth of administrative and teaching experience to this=20
position," says Stull. "Her energy, musicianship, and extensive=20
professional background will serve Oberlin extraordinarily well in the=20
coming years. I am very pleased she has joined our staff."
Kalyn earned her PhD in musicology from the Eastman School of Music; her=20
scholarship focuses on American music of the 20th century. Her bachelor's=20
and master's degrees, also in musicology, are from the University of=20
Western Ontario. She also holds an ARCT in piano performance from the Royal =
Conservatory of Music.
Kalyn has published articles on the composers Howard Hanson and Daniel=20
Gregory Mason, and has presented papers on the chamber music of Brahms and=20
Schubert, among others.
At Oberlin Kalyn will oversee curricular development and program evolution, =
and will also assist the dean with matters associated with managing the=20
Conservatory.
"I'm honored to be at Oberlin," says Kalyn. "The Conservatory is a=20
remarkable place. The students are among the best in the country, and I=92m =
looking forward to getting to know them and helping them meet their=20
academic goals. The artists and scholars on the faculty are also second to=20
none -- it will be a professional as well as a personal joy to work with=20
them."
The Oberlin Conservatory of Music, founded in 1865 and situated within the=20
intellectual vitality of Oberlin College since 1867, is the oldest=20
continuously operating conservatory in the United States. It is renowned=20
internationally as a professional music school of the highest caliber, and=20
its alumni have gone on to achieve illustrious careers in all aspects of=20
the serious music world. Numerous Oberlin alumni have attained stature as=20
solo performers, composers, and conductors, among them Jennifer Koh, Steven =
Isserlis, Denyce Graves, Franco Farina, Lisa Saffer, George Walker,=20
Christopher Rouse, David Zinman, and Robert Spano. All of the members of=20
the contemporary music ensembles eighth blackbird and the International=20
Contemporary Ensemble (ICE) are Oberlin graduates, and members of the =

alumni, who can also be found in major orchestras and opera companies=20
throughout the world.
