"Rush' brings laughs from all sides"
by Herb Hammer

Thanks to a few dedicated people from Chagrin Valley Little Theatre, a =
grant from the Alcoa Foundation and the generosity of longtime CVLT =
personality Steve Shields, the River Street Playhouse is back in =
business.

The tiny 50-seat auditorium perched just a few steps from CVLT has been =
virtually out of business for some years. Up and running again with =
"Rush Limbaugh in Night School," the theater is off to a rollicking new =
start.

The object of Charlie Varon's play is to lampoon the abrasive, =
self-congratulating, right-wing talk-show host. This he does with ease. =
But no matter on which side of the aisle you sit, you can't help but =
find this a masterpiece of off-the-wall comedy.

When Mr. Varon first put his play together in 1994, he played all 20 =
characters. In this edition and others that are done these days, more =
actors are added, but not many.

At River Street, Jim McCormack plays Rush, Michael Green is the =
narrator, Yvonne Pilarczyk plays five characters and also directs, and =
Daniel McElhaney plays 16 characters and contributes with some off-stage =
garbled phone conversations.

Somehow, all this comes together.

When Rush finds out that his ratings are slipping and that a Latin =
talk-show host is gaining on him, he immediately enrolls in a =
night-school Spanish class, wearing a Ben and Jerry's T-shirt (don't =
ask).

He meets up with Nina Eggly, also in a B&J T-shirt. They fall in love. =
Nina is really a former member of the left-wing Weather Underground and =
on the FBI's Most Wanted list.

Rush, wearing a fake mustache and beard, has been cast in a title role =
of "Othello" in Central Park.

Also in the show is Garrison Keillor and Jackie Mason.

A whole array of personalities drop in and out, including a professor =
who discusses the true meaning of the pear, of which he slices off a =
piece and hands it to a member of the audience to taste.

Characters come and go as the laughs grow and grow. If Mr. Varon is =
showing us what a buffoon he believes Rush Limbaugh to be, he does this =
in spades. If he just wants to make you laugh, he does that as well.

Jim McCormack not only looks and sounds like Rush Limbaugh, but, by the =
time the second act is over, you begin to believe he really is.

Yvonne Pilarczyk is not only a great wit on stage, but her directing =
keeps the comedy rolling.

Daniel McElhaney, as almost everyone else, is amazing. From J. Neil =
Rodriquez, the talk-show host, to Garrison Keillor, Mr. McElhaney has =
only to show up to make you fall down laughing. He has all his =
characters down pat and does them with a natural ease.

"Rush Limbaugh in Night School" does not intend to take on Rush and the =
entire extreme right wing. The object is to have a little fun and maybe =
to prove that Mr. Limbaugh is in the business of radio just to entertain =
and to make money.

Mr. Varon just wants you to laugh, and, if you make it to this weekend's =
final performances, you will.

Fridays & Saturdays @ 8 PM

  February 11th - February 26th

Directed by Yvonne Pilarczyk
