On this day, when we celebrate the green, we instead must mourn the
destruction of all that is green.

Yesterday, March 16, the Senate defeated an amendment (Cantwell Amdt. No.
168 ) to the federal budget that would have eliminated provisions allowing
oil exploration in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.  Basically, an
amendment to protect the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR) from oil
drilling was defeated.  This is now an opening for oil companies to drill in
the Arctic.  The ANWR is one of the last pristine, virtually untouched
ecosystems on this planet.  And now it will be consumed for a minimal amount
of oil.  This is oil that would not be needed if we instead created budgets
for alternative energy resources.

This budget also sets precedence for oil drilling and industrial expansion
anywhere else.  As House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi said, "If this
refuge is not special enough to be saved, then there is no place in the
United States that is safe from oil rigs, including the coastlines that for
now are protected from offshore drilling."  Imagine a view of Lake Erie
obstructed by oil rigs.

As artists, we have no art without nature.  The earliest paintings were
always of nature, theater was born of religions so closely tied to nature
and musical instruments were always made from nature.  If we don't take
action, we'll be painting oil rigs, putting Charenton Theater Company in
Steel Valley and building pianos only from plastic and metal.

Here's what you can do:

1. Check out the facts for yourself. Go to the Senate's web page
www.senate.gov <http://www.senate.gov/> and learn about the Senate, how it
votes and what it votes on. Put this site on your favorites list, it will
be your most important! Then you can read about the amendment under the
"Votes" page.

2.  Contact your Senators.  Senator Mike DeWine actually voted for this
protection; not all Republicans were opposed to it (and Democrats against
it).  However, Senator George Voinovich did vote against it.  The link below
will show you the Senate roll call.

YOU CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE!!  The amendment was defeated 49-51; George's vote
can make a huge difference!

4.  Put these senators in your contact list.  That way, you'll be able to
drop them a line anytime you have an opinion about something.  Remember the
time for action is not only every four years in early November.

5.  Thank yourself for giving back a little something to the environment we
take so much from.
