Actors' Summit Theater presents=20
Classic 18th Century Comedy
She Stoops to Conquer
           =20
Actors=E2=80=99 Summit Theater announces the cast for Oliver Goldsmith=E2=
=80=99s 18th=20
century comedy of manners, She Stoops to Conquer. The play will have a previ=
ew=20
performance on Thursday, March 31, and will play through April 17 at Actors=
=E2=80=99 Summit=20
Theater in downtown Hudson.=20
=20
The Play
SQUIRE HARDCASTLE'S second wife is quite determined that her spoiled and not=
=20
too brilliant son, Tony Lumpkin, shall marry her niece, Constance Neville. I=
n=20
this way she will be enabled to keep in the family Miss Neville's fortune=20
which consists of a casket of valuable jewels. The young people, however, ha=
ve=20
other plans, especially Miss Neville who is secretly pledged to one, Hasting=
s.
Mr. Hardcastle, likewise, has plans for his own charming daughter, Kate, who=
m=20
he wishes to marry the son of his old friend, Sir Charles Marlow. It is youn=
g=20
Marlow's misfortune to be dumb in the presence of ladies of his own social=20
status. He is, however, a master of clever repartee when talking to bar maid=
s=20
and girls of like station.
The Hardcastle family are momentarily expecting the arrival of young Marlow=20
and his friend, Hastings. The approaching travelers stop at the village inn=20=
to=20
inquire their way. Tony Lumpkin, who is there as usual with his cronies,=20
conceives the idea of persuading the young men that they have lost their way=
 and=20
will have to spend the night at an inn. He directs them to the Hardcastle ho=
use=20
which he highly recommends if they will excuse the eccentricities of the own=
er=20
and his family.
Neither young Marlow nor Squire Hardcastle senses that both are victims of a=
=20
hoax and the squire is much incensed at the bold and impudent behavior of hi=
s=20
friend's son. Young Hastings, as soon as he sees Constance, puts two and two=
=20
together. This pair agree to keep Marlow in ignorance and pretend that=20
Constance and Kate simply happen to be stopping the night at the inn.
When introduced to Kate young Marlow can find little to say and stumbles ove=
r=20
that. In his embarrassment he never once looks at her face. It is not=20
surprising, therefore, that later in the evening when he sees her going abou=
t the=20
house in the plain house dress her father insists on, he takes her for the b=
ar=20
maid. She encourages the deception in order to find out if he is really as=20
witless as he seems. In her bar maid's guise she is pleasantly surprised to=20=
find=20
him not dumb but, indeed, possessed of a graceful and ready wit. When she=20
reveals herself as a well born but poor relation of the Hardcastle family he=
=20
acknowledges his love for her.
Further comic situations are created by Tony's attempts to help Constance an=
d=20
her lover elope with her casket of jewels. When through ludicrous=20
misunderstandings these come to naught, Squire Hardcastle benignly sets ever=
ything right=20
for both pairs of lovers.
The Playwright
Oliver Goldsmith (1730?=E2=80=931774). The son of an Irish clergyman, Goldsm=
ith was=20
graduated from Trinity College, Dublin, in 1749. He studied medicine at=20
Edinburgh and Leiden, but his career as a physician was quite unsuccessful.=20=
In 1756=20
he settled in London, where he achieved some success as a miscellaneous=20
contributor to periodicals and as the author of Enquiry into the Present Sta=
te of=20
Polite Learning in Europe (1759). But it was not until The Citizen of the Wo=
rld=20
(1762), a series of whimsical and satirical essays, that he was recognized a=
s=20
an able man of letters. His fame grew with The Traveler (1764), a philosophi=
c=20
poem, and the nostalgic pastoral The Deserted Village (1770). However, his=20
literary reputation rests on his two comedies, The Good-natur=E2=80=99d Man=20=
(1768) and She=20
Stoops to Conquer (1773), and his only novel, The Vicar of Wakefield (1766).=
=20
His comedies injected a much-needed sense of realism into the dull,=20
sentimental plays of the period. They are lively, witty, and imbued with an=20=
endearing=20
humanity. The Vicar of Wakefield is the warm, humorous, if somewhat=20
melodramatic, story of a country parson and his family. Although he earned a=
 great deal of=20
money in his lifetime, Goldsmith=E2=80=99s improvidence kept him poor. Boswe=
ll=20
depicted him as a ridiculous, blundering, but tenderhearted and generous cre=
ature.=20
He had the friendship of many of the literary and artistic great of his day,=
=20
the most notable being that of Samuel Johnson.
=20
The Cast
Returning to the Actors=E2=80=99 Summit stage are Connie Thackaberry in the=20=
