Comedy is as ruthless as its title
by Herb Hammer
Chagrin Valley Times
3/31/05

The monthly dinner party is being held at Nicky and Jay's house. After =
dinner the men stay in the dining room for a little game of "putt the =
ball into the cup" while the women do clean-up in the kitchen.

We never see any of the three men. The women gossip in the kitchen =
mostly about each other as soon as one leaves the room.

You can tell from the start that something is up or will be up before =
long. With a title as ruthless as Smell of the Kill you know something =
will happen and soon.

Chagrin Valley Little Theatre is staging Michelle Lowe's black comedy =
for this the last weekend of the run. (not really, the show runs thru =
April 9th). The Cleveland Playhouse presented Smell of the Kill before =
it went to Broadway where it was well received.

Kellie Mclvor as Nicky, Mindy Childress as Molly, and Stefanie Paginini =
as Debra play the three women with delicious comic fire. They are so =
good together you almost find yourself rooting for them as their =
hair-raising scheme begins to develop.

Nicky is the stern, strong-willed one. Her husband Jay has been =
indicted for embezzlement and she'll be darned if she'll quit her job =
just to help him. And though she says she does, you know she doesn't =
like him at all.

Molly and Danny appear to be the perfect loving couple. A little too =
perfect. Danny coos love words to her from the dining room and she coos =
back. There's something wrong here, and the long-married, childless =
Molly is about to tell us. Her sweet innocence turns into a revelation =
that rocks the house. Miss Childress is pure joy in the role.

And there's Debra, so abused by Marty she doesn't realize she's been =
stepped on for years. Or so we think.

Truths are told as the men rocket golf balls into the kitchen, demanding =
dessert. The dessert Nicky concocts from the golf balls is a whipped =
cream sight to behold.

When Jay takes his two buddies down to show them his new meat locker =
where his dead deer are hanging, the real fun begins.

Smell of the kill has gone through some minor changes since it left the =
Play House. These changes have only made it better. Bob Kilpatrick =
directs and does a sterling job of keeping his ladies in tune with the =
harsh comedy. He helps bring about a fine ensemble performance.

Bob Fadeley is the off-stage voice of both Jay and Danny while someone =
who wishes not to be recognized does the voice of Marty. Both are quite =
convincing.

Edmond Wolff's kitchen set makes the CVLT stage appear to be much larger =
than it actually is.

With only two night to go, (not really, the show runs thru April 9th), =
theater goers would be well advised to check this one out. It's an hour =
and 10 minutes of an off-the-wall good time.
