The Artist Reception for A Hero's Journey-The War Within is Sunday, April 10
from 1:00-5:00 pm.  An Artful Jazz Concert in conjunction with the reception
features MaryAnn Messina and Friends from 3:00-5:00 pm.  This all-female
group will perform jazz compositions by female composers.
 
A Hero's Journey - The War Within is on exhibit in the Main Gallery at The
Fine Arts Association through June 11.  This body of work by artist Rod
DeFoe II consists of sculptures constructed mostly out of clay. DeFoe
describes many of his pieces as being a fundamental commentary on the bust,
a much-used idiom in art.  A further expression of this theme in the exhibit
is a torso, extensively modified, containing staircases and found objects.
"I tend to use keys and staircases quite often indicating opportunities and
progress, respectively," says DeFoe.  All of the sculptures are made from a
clay body that is half porcelain and half stoneware, which provides
stability while allowing great retention of detail. The found objects tell
narratives, sans mots, that are left to the viewer to interpret. 
 
The other clay piece in the show is an extensive labyrinth called "Theseus,"
that is displayed on the floor for the sake of point of view.

Fleshing out the show are several collage on board works that rely on old
war maps taken from a 1959 publication from West Point. While the map
collage work comments about the "war within," they also provide perspective
on our current engagement in Iraq and the Middle East.  Rather than making
judgments about wars, it serves to create a visual discourse of the
parallels drawn between conflicts, both real and imagined, inside humans and
between humans.
 
"My goal is to make manifest, in the physical world, reflections of
conflicts and realizations that go on inside.  The solid thread I find in my
work is the analysis of personal path.  Those who view [this exhibit] may
catch a thread of empathy for the human condition, beauty in the experience,
and a better understanding of the self." (Rod DeFoe II, sculptor) 
 
The Reception and Concert are FREE and open to the public.  Refreshments
will be served.
FREE on-site parking is available.  The Main Gallery is barrier free.
 
Visitors to the Opening can also view the Art House SEAN (Self-Employed
Artists' Network) Annual Members Show 2005 in the Gund Gallery located on
the second level of The Fine Arts Association.  This is Art House's first
annual juried AH SEAN Members Show and is entited in.tox.i.cate: to
stimulate or excite.  Juror Rita Telaak, artist and owner of Eye Candy
Gallery has chosen Nectar of the Gods, a watercolor by Patricia Sigmier for
Best in Show.  Ms. Sigmier was awarded a one-person show at The Fine Arts
Association in 2006.  Honorable mentions were awarded to Diane Harto for her
wood/sculpture of American Bald Eagle and Melissa Daubert for her mixed
media/sculpture of Tongue Wagger.
 
Several pieces in both exhibits are available for purchase.
