NYU4U II - Musical Theatre Workshop
August 8 - 19
hosted by Rocky River Community Theatre
Presented by Slightly Askew Company Members of NYU
This two week workshop will be taught by current NYU students and alumni of
the CAP21 musical theatre program. Last summer, students were not only
exposed to a wide array of classes ranging from classical musical theatre
techniques, but also to the cutting edge collaborative theatre creation processes put
into use by New York theatre practitioners today. The goal of this year's
workshop is to expose our Cleveland students to even more varied theatre
methodologies to enhance not only their individual performing abilities, but to
expand their working knowledge of the art of theatre, increase their
marketability as actors, awaken them to new and exciting experiences, and to nurture the
creative artist in each of them.
The workshop will be divided into two parts. The first week will be devoted
to intensive theatrical training by not only teachers that have been involved
in the Cleveland workshops before, but new teachers as well.
Cool new classes to be offered this year in addition to the traditional fare:
WEEK ONE
Film and Television Technique
Learn the specifics about the distinct art of film acting by participating
in on-camera exercises, scenes, and more. Material will be drawn from scripts
of currently running television shows and films in the works, and students
will not only learn more about the differences between stage acting and film
acting, but will also participate in mock on-camera film auditions. And with
the use of digital technology, our students will be able to learn by actually
watching the playback of themselves!
Shakespeare Intensive
In this class, students will not only work on analysis, monologues, and
scenework from the Bard's plays, but they will also be introduced to
interpretation of his work using devised theatre techniques. Just as theatre companies in
New York analyze and deconstruct Shakespeare's plays to make them more
relevant to today's audiences and to take a political stance on the work, we will
get our students involved in thinking about this text critically and
actively, rather than from the removed standpoint usually taken. We will also have a
lot of fun creating our own interpretations of Shakespeare's work as seen
through our students' eyes!
Acting Methods
Rather than teach generalized scene study and acting classes, this year we
will be introducing our students to the different acting methods available to
them. From Stanislavsky to Meisner to Adler to Mamet, our students will
participate in exercises and gain a working knowledge of these methods to apply to
their own scene work, monologues, and theatrical performances. By studying
these tride and true methods, our young actors will grow to further understand
the ways in which different performers approach creating a moment onstage,
and will hopefully find a method that intrigues and interests them
individually as artists!
Mask Work, Improvisation, and Clown
This class will introduce students to the practice of mask work in
performance. Taught as an acting class in major universities, this class will use both
Balinese mask technique and French theatre artisan Jacques LeCoq's methods
(which have been integral in creating the works of Cirque du Soleil) to bring
truth, simplicity, and ultimately fun to the actor's craft. From neutral
masks to characters and buffoons, this class will run the gamut of mask work and
improvisational possibilities in order to free the actor, artist, and clown
in each of our students.
Puppetry
Students will be both introduced to the different types of puppetry used in
theatrical performances across the globe as well as gain puppetry skills used
for performance. From shadow puppetry to bunraku to rod work to found
objects, students will be able to have fun as well as unleash their unending
creativity by building puppets and participating in puppet performances of their
own.
JUST TO NAME A FEW!
WEEK TWO
THE SECOND WEEK will be a very special week dedicated to introducing
students to an entirely different set of performance skills.
Our students will be involved in the creation and workshopping of a brand
new musical theatre piece by Slightly Askew company members Randy Blair and
Will Van Dyke. During this week, students will be cast in the Cleveland workshop
of the piece, to be presented before an audience on the final day of
classes. This opportunity will be conducted as if the students were actually
participating in the workshop of a new Broadway musical, and specific skills will be
called into play during this time that students would need to utilize in a
professional performing situation. Not only will our actors gain experience
preparing to perform in an original musical, but they will be exposed to the
time constraints of this sort of venture; the constant refining and changing of
material; the utilization of all the acting training they have received to
create character, situation, and conflict in a world of limited costumes,
lights, and scenery; and many other unique challenges of creating something from
the bottom up. This will be a wonderful growth experience for our students,
and is especially important for those preparing to go into musical theatre or
acting as a profession.
BUT THAT'S NOT ALL!
Students from the NYU4U workshop will also be invited, if they wish, to
participate in the New York workshop production of this musical. On September
18th (date to be confirmed), the show will be given a staged reading for
producers and agencies in a theatre in New York City. Members of the Cleveland
workshop will be given the excellent opportunity of sharing the stage with
Broadway performers, NYU students, and alumni, adding an important credit to their
resume, as well as exposing them to another unique experience and set of
performance skills.
Students will be responsible for all of their expenses in participation in
the NYU performance, such as air fare, hotel, any other personal
accommodations. But what an incredible opportunity for those who can attend!!!!!!
We believe in the talent of all of our students, and look forward to another
challenging and fun summer in Cleveland. Hopefully you'll join us for two
awesome weeks -- we can't wait to see you!
Please respond to this email if you are interested in hearing more about
this event!!
