You won’t want to miss "Picasso at the Lapin Agile," an award winning comedy written by comedian/actor/playwright Steve Martin. Directed by Darrell Lowe, the production will take the G. B. Community Theatre stage for three final performances this weekend, April 15-17. Friday and Saturday shows begin at 8 p.m. The Sunday performance begins at 3:00 p.m.

It surprises many to discover that the funny man known for his comedic roles in "Saturday Night Live" and in numerous movies such as "Roxanne,"

"Father of the Bride" and "LA Story," is also a playwright. While Steve Martin’s unusual title hints that this play is a thinking man’s satire, the show, which has attracted large audiences in Chicago, LA and New York, is also a very accessible and funny evening of entertainment, exactly what one would expect from the successful comedian.

Set in a Paris bar "The Lapin Agile," in 1904, this one act play tells of an imaginary meeting between Pablo Picasso, played by Christopher Nappi, and Albert Einstein, played by Douglas Eric Anderson. Picasso struts across the stage and flirts with an admiring female and Einstein becomes a human calculator as Freddy the bartender, played by D.J. Hellerman, balances his books. Each of the not yet famous geniuses believes that he alone holds the key to the century’s greatest achievement. As the two men engage in a battle of ideas, however, it eventually becomes clear to both that at their most creative levels, art and science operate in much the same way.

Also featured in the show are a group of charismatic bystanders, each adding his own unique perspective to the evenings events— "Suzanne," played by Tessa White, is a sultry and passionate admirer of Picasso who is insulted when the artist doesn’t remember her. "Sagot," played by Tom Milligan, is an art dealer whose passion for his newest acquisition, a painting by Matisse, sends Picasso into a jealous funk. Jeremiah Peckol plays "Schmendiman," an idiot inventor who thinks his new building material "schmendimite" will be his ticket to fame. Debra Greene-Lowe plays "The Countess" who, just as Einstein predicts, wanders into the bar quite by accident to meet him, even though the two had agreed to meet someplace else. Freddy’s girlfriend, "Germaine," is a sassy waitress played by Jordan Malin. Ralph Bacon plays "Gaston," a hilarious old barfly with a quick wit and even quicker bladder. Sarah Saddler plays a delightful and funny "Female Admirer." At the end of the show, yet another of
the century’s famous appears-- a pop-singing time traveler from Memphis, Tennessee played by Eric Grapatin.

Tickets can be purchased in advance at the Arts Center, 2928 West 13th Street, Ashtabula or over the phone by calling (440) 964-3396. Tickets can also be purchased at the door while seats remain available. Ticket prices are $12 for patron seats, $9 adults, $8 seniors, and $7 for students.

Come on out and join us for a fun and frenzied show!
