THE STORY:

On the night before he is to depart for Philadelphia, an Irishman looks over the humdrum life he is leaving and wonders. As the housekeeper putters about, his father again engages the canon in a daring game of checkers. Later the lads toddle in to have a word of farewell. It is a moribund place. It will be good to leave his father and the gulf of their misunderstanding, as well as the bragging of the boys about their girls. It means leaving the girl who was is fond of him, but Philadelphia beckons more strongly. Toward the climax, the aunt and uncle with whom he will be staying in the U.S. appear and they are shockingly unstylish. This tale is told with a humorous doppelganger technique: opposite the youth is his devilish and ever Irish alter ego who keeps popping irreverent thoughts into his head and keeps the proceedings hilariously restive. "A funny ... [and] affecting play." N.Y. Herald Tribune.

ABOUT THE PLAYWRIGHT

Brian Friel is considered by most to be the greatest living Irish playwright. He carries on the tradition of J. M. Synge and Sean O’Casey in capturing the heart and history of his people with plays that are at once poetic, humorous, and tragic.

Born in Northern Ireland in 1929 Friel was trained in the seminary and worked as a teacher before turning to a career as a journalist and a writer of short stories. In 1963 he accepted a residency at the new Tyrone Guthrie Theatre in Minneapolis where he began work on his first major play PHILADELPHIA, HERE I COME. The play won him instant recognition and was a huge success in Dublin, London, and on Broadway.

In 1980 Friel, along with poet laureate Seamus Heaney and the young actor Stephen Rea, established the Field Day Theatre in Derry, with the idea of promoting “cross border” collaborations among Protestant and Catholic theatre artists from both Northern Ireland and the Irish Republic and to address issues of cultural hatred and misunderstanding.

In the past 40 years he has had numerous plays produced on Broadway and around the world, including LOVERS, FREEDOM OF THE CITY, FAITH HEALER, ARISTOCRATS, DANCING AT LUGHNASA (Tony Award Winner), WONDERFUL TENNESSEE, and MOLLY SWEENEY. Most recently he wrote the screenplay for the film of LUGHNASA, and has translated many of Chekhov’s plays.

ABOUT THE DIRECTOR

Sarah May is thrilled to be working at Lakeland for the first time. Sarah is a well-known Cleveland area theatre director who began her career as a company member of The Cleveland Play House. Sarah spent 10 years in New York City performing, directing, and developing educational programs for Playwrights Horizons, Henry Street Settlement, and Roundabout Theatre.

In Cleveland she has served as Director of Education for Great Lakes Theatre Festival and as Artistic Director of Karamu Theatre. She has taught acting at The Cleveland Play House, and Cuyahoga Community College in Cleveland, and for The Lincoln Center Institute and Lehman College in New York.

She has been nominated for the Northern Ohio Live Award of Achievement in Theatre on six occasions, and was the winner of the 2001 Award for her production of A PIECE OF MY HEART at Beck Center. She was honored by The Scene Magazine, which named her Charenton Theatre production of SIX DEGREES OF SEPARATION the “Best Theatre Production” of 2003; her BOY GETS GIRL at Beck Center was among the Cleveland Plain Dealer’s “10 Best Plays of 2003.”

Most recently Sarah directed a revival of Lillian Hellman’s THE CHILDREN”S HOUR for The Beck Center for the Arts in Lakewood, Ohio and was a Guest Artist at Baldwin-Wallace College in Berea, Ohio where she directed Brian Friel’s TRANSLATIONS.
