African Soul International presents the International Conference on =
Dance and Culture @

Playhouse Square Foundation, May 27-30th, 2005.=20

One of this year's featured master artists is Maguette Camara, a =
choreographer from Senegal, West Africa, who has been an =
artist-in-residence with the Alvin Ailey Company for 8 years.

Mr. Camara will bring to Northeast Ohio the professionalism, and =
artistic integrity of West African dance that he shares with his =
students who are both apprentices and professional artists.  His =
knowledge of West African dance, culture, history and technique provide =
an excellent opportunity for dancers of all backgrounds to cross-train, =
thereby increasing their knowledge of the origins of dance and the =
universal connections of movement and rhythm. =20

The conference will also feature separate drum classes for men and =
women, emphasizing the holistic culture behind the drumming movement.

Mr. Camara will be joined by 7 other master artists including Baba =
Raymond Sylla, the former choreographer for Ballets National Du Senegal =
and the first teacher of the renowned artist Assane Konte of the =
Kankouran West African Dance Company in Washington DC.  Baba Raymond and =
Mama Kadiatou Conte will lead a discussion on traditional =
rites-of-passage and the role of the artists in preserving culture and =
heritage.  Mama Kadiatou Conteh recently completed a 10-show run at the =
Kennedy Center in Washington DC, with her 25-member women's ensemble, =
Balafone.
