ARTS GROUPS GAIN COUNTY  DOLLARS
=20
=20
By JAY MILLER=20
=20
The Board of Cuyahoga County Commissioners has awarded nearly $500,000 in =20
grants to 24 area arts organizations.=20

Among the organizations that will receive $496,228 in county money in this=20
round are: Arts Collinwood Inc. ($18,000), Cleveland Botanical Garden=20
($31,200), Cleveland Shakespeare Festival ($8,040) and the Western Reserve=20=
Historical=20
Society ($36,000).=20
=20
Tom Schorgl, president and CEO of the Community Partnership for Arts and =20
Culture of Cleveland, who chaired the panel that reviewed the grants, lauded=
 the =20
commissioners and said he believed it was the only public arts program of it=
s=20
 kind in the country.=20

This was the second round of county arts grants this fiscal year. Last=20
September, the commissioners awarded $206,000 to nine groups.=20

Unlike the last round, the commissioners this time paid more attention to=20
smaller arts group. In the first round, awards went to organizations such a=
s=20
the Cleveland Museum of Art ($37,500) and the Cleveland Orchestra ($25,000)=
.=20

To get the grants, arts organizations must make competitive presentations t=
o=20
a community panel that selects the recipients. =20

After its first-ever effort to put county general fund money into the arts,=
=20
the commissioners realized they needed to spread their largesse further. So=
=20
for this second round, first-round winners were excluded and the commission=
ers=20
pledged that 40% of their budget would go to organizations with annual=20
budgets of less than $1.5 million.=20

Among the other grant recipients in this round are:=20
    * American Music Theater Arts dba Kalliope Stage $ 18,600=20
    *   Apollo=E2=80=99s Fire, The Cleveland Baroque Orchestra $ 18,000=20
    * Beck Center for the Arts $ 15,000=20
    *   Charenton Theater Company $ 5,993=20
    *   Clayworks, A Cooperative $ 3,060=20
    *   Cleveland Jazz Orchestra $ 8,250=20
    *   Contemporary Youth Orchestra $ 13,545=20

Congratulations to all recipients! Nearly 2/3 of the total is going to =20
organizations with budgets under $1.5 million, a great step from the =20
Commissioners. Please be sure to thank them for this support, especially if=20=
you  are a=20
participant/patron of any from the list.
