Lorain County Community College (LCCC) and WGAR Radio are proudly
co-sponsoring this SUGARLAND concert.

SUGARLAND is made up of three successful singer/songwriters based in
Atlanta,
Kristen Hall (guitar), a singer/songwriter specializing in searing
heartache, Jennifer Nettles
(lead vocals), a powerhouse singer with some serious twang, and Kristian
Bush (mandolin),
a local Atlanta folk-rock hero, who is one-half of Billy Pilgrim, a duo
with a major record
label deal. The group formed in 2002 out of Eddie’s Attic, an Atlanta
nightclub owned by
Nettles’ husband, Todd Van Sickle. All three members are veterans of
the Atlanta
folk-rock scene that produced the Indigo Girls, Shawn Mullins and John
Mayer.

Jennifer Nettles, the lead singer, grew up on Southern gospel. With
big,
bluesy delivery, sly wit and infectious energy, she fronted the band
Soul Miner’s
Daughter and drew big crowds on the local circuit and at Lillith Fair
with her own
band. Kristen Hall released her first album in 1990 and recorded two
albums for
Windham Hill before turning to full-time songwriting. She has written
tunes for
Sarah McLachlan, Shawn Colvin and Amanda Marshall (international hit Let
It
Rain). Kristian Bush as half of Billy Pilgrim recorded two mid-‘90s
albums for
Atlantic Records. Within minutes of getting together, the trio clicked
creating
something different than anything any of them had done before. The
songs are
rootsy and lyrically sophisticated, but still catchy and accessible.

It all began with a phone call. Hall contacted Bush to see if he was
interested in writing together. At the time, Bush felt that Billy
Pilgrim was more
work than fun. He also found himself at a crossroads in his life when
his wife
became pregnant and his mother died unexpectedly. Hall was also at a
crossroads, having built a name for herself with two albums for High
Street/Windham Hill, which were comprised of soul-baring songs about
which
she says, “They were driving me into the ground. Every night I sang
them and
every night they kept me in that place, and I just wanted out.”

“We come from different musical backgrounds,” Nettles says. “We have
different personalities. That creates a balance among the three of us
that
creates something pretty unique,” she told Brian Mansfield who did an
article on
the group for USA Today (11/1/04). Sugarland Swirl, the band-inspired
flavor at
Jake’s Ice Cream, plays off that idea by mixing fudge swirl, blonde
brownies and
white chocolate covered pretzels into white chocolate ice cream.

SUGARLAND’s debut album Twice the Speed of Life, on which the trio
wrote all 11 tracks, has gone gold. Their hit “Baby Girl” was the
highest-charting
debut single by a country group in 14 years and for the last month, the
album has
been in the Top Ten on Billboard’s Top Country Albums chart. The video
of
“Baby Girl” hit the top of the CMT Top Twenty on May 11th. The group
presented an award and performed “Baby Girl” on the ACM Awards on CBS on

Tuesday, May 17th, and also performed live on Good Morning America
Wednesday, June 1st. They will perform on the steps of City Hall in New
York
City as part of the CMA Awards press conference officially announcing
the
awards show move to the Big Apple on Thursday, June 2nd, then after some

other concert stops, they will be on their way to their Tuesday, June
14th
