The Jewish Community Center of Cleveland Announces

 2005-06 Arts & Culture Season

=20

Rain Pryor's Fried Chicken and Latkes and Rodgers & Hammerstein's South
Pacific=20

Highlight a Season of Theater, Jazz, Comedy and Classical and Popular =
Music

=20

July 17, 2005 (Beachwood) - The Jewish Community Center of Cleveland
announces its 2005-2006 Arts & Culture season of theater, jazz, visual =
arts,
classical and popular music and literary events beginning in September,
2005.

=20

The season, which was announced at a June 28 reception of patrons and
supporters, is made possible by generous funding from the Green Arts =
Fund of
the Jewish Community Federation of Cleveland, the Leonard Krieger Fund =
of
the Cleveland Foundation, the Meisel Family Foundation, and John and =
Bonnie
Osher.

=20

"We are very grateful to our funders who have enabled the JCC to renew =
its
commitment to support, produce and present the arts to the Northeast =
Ohio
Jewish community and the community-at-large," said Enid Rosenberg, board
chair of the Jewish Community Center of Cleveland. "The JCC's arts and
culture program is diverse in scope, rich in tradition, and central to =
the
Jewish purposes of our JCC."

=20

The JCC Arts & Culture program brings to Cleveland Rain Pryor, daughter =
of
the legendary comedian Richard Pryor, in her one-woman show titled =
Fried
Chicken & Latkes (January 21, 2006) at the Ohio Theatre, Playhouse =
Square.
It is a poignant and funny look at her experiences growing up as a black
Jewish girl in Beverly Hills. Using her skills as a story weaver, =
singer,
mimic, dancer and comedienne, Rain takes her audience on a journey of =
racial
identity, family, celebrity and spiritual growth.

=20

The JCC is exploring presenting a series of classic musicals by Jewish
songwriters over the next few years. Titled, "The Great American =
Songbook,"
these musicals would revitalize and celebrate the unparalleled =
contributions
to American musical theater by Jewish songwriters. Ragtime, the first
production in this series, played to more than 4300 and opened the JCC's
2004-05 season. The second in the series, South Pacific, by Richard =
Rodgers
& Oscar Hammerstein II (October 15 - November 6, 2005), will be directed =
by
Fred Sternfeld and performed at the Cuyahoga Community College Eastern
Campus Performing Arts Center.

=20

South Pacific, based on the Pulitzer Prize winning novel "Tales of the =
South
Pacific" by James Michener, has garnered the Pulitzer Prize for drama; =
The
New York Drama Critics Circle Award for Best Musical; nine Tony Awards
including Best Musical, Book and Score; nine Donaldson Awards including =
Best
Musical, Book, Lyrics and Score. Set in an island paradise during World =
War
II, South Pacific is a tale about lovers who are threatened by the =
dangers
of prejudice and war. The score is as breathtaking as the tropical =
setting -
"Some Enchanted Evening," "Bali Ha'i," "There is Nothin' Like a Dame,"
"Younger Than Springtime" and more. South Pacific ranks among the most
celebrated of Rodgers and Hammerstein's acclaimed musical masterpieces.

=20

To open the season and provide a context for South Pacific, radio
personality Bill Rudman, a nationally recognized expert in classic =
American
song, will be hosting a special concert titled Something Wonderful: The
Musicals of Rodgers & Hammerstein (September 24 & 25, 2005) highlighting =
the
work of Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II. "Rodgers and =
Hammerstein
wrote stories centered in strong human values" states Rudman. "They were
socially conscious humanists and teachers in ways that resonate with =
Jewish
cultural values. With South Pacific, they were particularly interested =
in
the theme of intolerance, which, as far as they were concerned, was the
heart of the matter, and why they wanted to write the piece in the first
place."

=20

Paul Shapiro's Midnight Minyan, (March 4, 2006) will bring its special =
blend
of 40's hipster jazz and Yiddish swing to the JCC's Stonehill =
Auditorium, in
the Mandel Center, Beachwood. This musical combo delivers a brilliant
synthesis of klezmer and hard bop with a three-horn frontline of two =
tenor
saxes and trumpet, featuring Paul Shapiro on tenor sax, backed by a =
steamy
rhythm section of piano, bass and drums. They will be performing music =
from
their critically acclaimed CD entitled "Midnight Minyan" (Tzadik label).
(Note: this is a new performance date for Midnight Minyan-previous date =
was
March 11.)

=20

An Evening of Classical Music (April 23, 2006) returns for its sixth =
year at
Stonehill Auditorium. This extraordinary concert brings together an
astounding array of world-renowned classical musicians, many from the =
former
Soviet Union, who have played and recorded with the Cleveland Orchestra =
and
many of the other great orchestras in the world. Audiences will enjoy =
the
music of both Russian and world composers as members of Cleveland's New
American community contribute their virtuosity and time to this annual
concert.

=20

Completing the 2005-06 season is the hilariously funny Jewish family =
saga
>From Door to Door (May 4 - 21, 2006), directed by Fred Sternfeld and
performed at Cuyahoga Community College Eastern Campus Performing Arts
Center. The title of the play is a translation of a phrase, "l'dor =
va'dor",
"from generation to generation", that comes from a Hebrew prayer. This
poignant family comedy features three generations of Jewish women who =
reveal
what binds them and what divides them, the changing roles of women and =
the
constant power of family love.

=20

The full complement of JCC Arts & Culture programs for the 2005-06 =
season
include the Playmakers Youth Theatre, the Festival of Jewish Books and
Authors, the 36th Annual Jewish Community Center Photography Show and =
the
Dorothy Silver Playwriting Competition.

=20

Central to the mission of JCCs nationwide, Arts and Culture is one of =
four
key program areas through which the Jewish Community Center of Cleveland
builds and strengthens Cleveland's entire Jewish Community by providing
exceptional programs and services that enhance Jewish continuity and =
Jewish
identity. These four key program areas are Health, Wellness and =
Recreation;
Early Childhood Education; Camping; and Arts and Culture.

=20

Membership to the JCC is open to all. The JCC is a nonprofit social =
service
agency that receives funding from the Jewish Community Federation of
Cleveland and the United Way of Greater Cleveland.

Something Wonderful: The Musicals of Rodgers and Hammerstein

September 24, 2005 at 8:00 p.m. &

September 25, 2005 at 2:00 p.m.

Cuyahoga Community College Eastern Campus Performing Arts Center

=20

To open the season and provide a context for South Pacific, radio
personality Bill Rudman, a nationally recognized expert in classic =
American
song, will take audiences on a musical journey celebrating Broadway's =
most
famous songwriting team when he hosts Something Wonderful: The Musicals =
of
Rodgers and Hammerstein. The multi-media concert features Nancy Maier at =
the
piano and several of Cleveland's finest musical theater performers. =
Rudman
will explore the legendary Broadway collaboration that began with =
Oklahoma!
in 1943 and continued through such beloved musicals as Carousel, South
Pacific, The King and I and The Sound of Music. In addition to =
selections
from these and other shows, Something Wonderful will include rare audio =
and
video clips and dozens of still images.=20

=20

The concert - part of Rudman's ongoing series "The Song Is You!" -- is
being created especially for the JCC and will complement the production =
of
South Pacific. "Rodgers and Hammerstein wrote stories centered in strong
human values" states Rudman. "They were socially conscious humanists and
teachers in ways that resonate with Jewish cultural values. With South
Pacific, they were particularly interested in the theme of intolerance =
--
which as far as they were concerned was the heart of the matter, and why
they wanted to write the piece in the first place. These two events will
give Clevelanders the opportunity to explore the world of two great =
artists
- script and lyric writer Hammerstein and composer Rodgers - whose =
impact on
the American musical can't be overstated. Over the course of 16 years =
and 11
musicals, the team not only gave audiences extraordinary entertainment;
their stories glow with human truth and idealism"

Emile. Nellie learns that the mother of his children was an island =
native
and, unable to turn her back on the prejudices with which she was =
raised,
refuses Emile's proposal of marriage. Meanwhile, the strapping=20

Lt. Joe Cable denies himself the fulfillment of a future with an =

Rain Pryor:

Fried Chicken & Latkes

A One-Woman Experience

January 21, 2006 at 8:00 p.m.

Ohio Theatre, Playhouse Square Center

=20

Rain Pryor, daughter of legendary comedian Richard Pryor, stars in this
extraordinary autobiographical one-woman experience. Rain Pryor grew up =
as a
black, Jewish girl in Beverly Hills, where the cars people drove were =
the
only thing of color. Calling upon her versatile skills as a story =
weaver,
singer, mime, mimic, comedienne and dancer, Rain takes us on her journey
through hate, racism, fear, loss and love, with poignant and hilarious
twists and turns. It's a hero's journey of racial identity, family, =
career,
celebrity, spiritual growth and love, told from the standpoint of a =
person
born into a world of "Us vs. Them." Punctuated by comic songs and
heartrending ballads, Fried Chicken & Latkes teaches us that living an
authentic life is not about "Where do I stand?" - it's about "Here I =
stand!"

Paul Shapiro's Midnight Minyan

March 4, 2006 at 8:00 p.m.

Stonehill Auditorium

Jewish Community Center, Mandel Bldg., Beachwood

=20

Paul Shapiro's Midnight Minyan is a bubbling brew of soulful Jewish
traditional music reimagined by someone who grew up playing tenor and =
flute
while listening to Blue Note records and John Coltrane and playing in =
funk
and rhythm and blues bands-with a heady mixture of Middle-Eastern modes =
and
bristling backbeats. Shapiro put together a scintillating combo with a
three-horn frontline of two tenor saxes and trumpet, featuring himself =
on
tenor sax, backed by a steamy rhythm section of piano, bass and drums. =
It's
a special blend of 40's hipster jazz and Yiddish swing; a brilliant
synthesis of klezmer and hard bop. They will be performing music from =
their
critically acclaimed CD entitled "Midnight Minyan" (Tzadik label).

>From Door to Door

May 4 - 21, 2006

by James Sherman

directed by Fred Sternfeld

Cuyahoga Community College Eastern Campus Performing Arts Center

=20

This hilariously funny Jewish family saga derives its title from a
translation of a phrase, l'dor va'dor , "from generation to =
generation",
that comes from a Hebrew prayer.

Spanning 70 years of history, this poignant family comedy features three
generations of Jewish women who reveal what binds them and what divides
them, the changing roles of women and the constant power of family love.
Russian immigrant Bessie married a man chosen for her, kept her accent,
cooked gefilte fish and lived in fear. Her daughter Mary is trapped =
between
status quo and women's lib. She became a wife and mother surrendering =
her
gift for painting and any thought of a career. Mary's daughter Deborah,
allowed to be herself, must learn to balance living in the contemporary
world and carrying on a legacy.
