THE MUSIC:=20

<http://omkaramusic.com/> Omkara is an eclectic world music trio that
has music in their blood. Brothers Ravi, Aneal and Naryan Padmanabha
produce an intense and dynamic sound. The current trend in world music
is to throw technology with tradition and call it new music, but this is
not the case with Omkara. The brothers explore classical and
contemporary Indian music styles by blending Eastern and Western
instruments into a classical setting, allowing for infinite
improvisational explorations. From traditional folk to the avant outer
limits, Omkara navigates freely between both worlds. They avoid typical
electronic fads by staying purely acoustic and creating sound with an
acoustic palette. The trio has recently completed their self-titled CD
=93Omkara=94 and collaborated with Shri Nandakumar.

<http://www.joshuageisler.com/> Joshua Geisler plays bamboo flute,
guitar, bass, and builds custom made musical instruments. With a
flowing, highly ornamented style, his music crosses cultural boundaries
by embracing both chromaticism and microtonality.=20
He began his musical journey playing the guitar in high school. Next
came 4 years at the Berklee College of Music, where he majored in Music
Production and Engineering. It was at Berklee that he started playing
bamboo flute and developing an interest in Indian music. At the same
time, he was influenced by the teachings and philosophy of percussion
master Jamey Haddad. After graduating in the fall of 1998, he moved to
upstate New York and studied North Indian Classical Music with bansuri
master Steve Gorn. Then in the fall of 1999, he traveled to Bombay,
India, where he studied flute playing and flute making under the great
Pandit Raghunath Seth for 4 months. Another trip to India followed in
the winter of 2000-2001, where Josh worked as musical director for the
documentary film, Take Me to the River, about the Maha Kumbh Mela, the
Hindu festival that attracted the largest crowd of any event in the
history of the world. There he performed and recorded with Allahabad
based singer Ganesh Kumar, and perfected his skills at flutemaking.
During this trip, he also studied in Varanasi with sarod virtuoso Pandit
Vikash Maharaj.=20

=20

Shri Nandakumar hails from Ambalapuzha in Kerala and is related to the
renowned Naadaswaram exponents the (late) Ambalapuzha brothers. He
underwent training under Shri Kaitavanam Madhavadas in the
Gurukulavaasam tradition. At a young age he won prizes at several
competitions and national youth festivals and also accompanied leading
artistes. Coming to Mumbai even as a teenager he has risen to fame
through the display of pure talent and finesse in his performances and
dedication to the cause of imparting knowledge. It is a fact today that
he is the most sought after Mridangam teacher in Mumbai.
Apart from being active in the regular concert scene, Shri Nandakumar is
a regular featured artiste in both the All India Radio and Doordarshan.
He is also the principal Mridangam teacher at sabhaas such as the
prestigious Sri Shanmukhananda Fine Arts and Sangeetha Sabha, Music
Triangle, Gana Kala Vidya Nilayam, and Nadaalaya in Mumbai.

THE FILM:

<http://www.projectilearts.org/takemetotheriver> Take Me To The River
is a documentary film of the Maha Kumbh Mela, a Hindu festival and
pilgrimage which was the largest gathering in the history of the world.
The film documents the event by immersing you in the midst of the
madness. Experience a roller coaster of emotions as obscurity and
clarity flow across the crowded and dusty flood plain of Ganges and
Yamuna Rivers. Through misty dawns, crowded streets, peaceful moments
and chaotic sprints to the river, you'll journey into the Sangam, the
physical and spiritual heart of the Mela where sins are cleansed,
bathers can escape infinite karmic cycles and world peace is possible.
You'll meet Swamis from the largest and most prestigious Hindu holy
orders, ascetic naga babas, boatmen, policemen and pilgrims.=20
While interviews provide a narrative for the film, Take Me To The River
offers more than an analytical portrait of the Kumbh Mela. Shot in Super
16mm film with music recorded exclusively at the festival, the blatant
premises and subtle nuances of the Maha Kumbh Mela come alive with a
striking visual intensity. While uncovering the Mela's historical
origins, examining the importance of ritual and searching for personal
redemption, "Take Me To The River" ultimately conveys the essence of the
Mela experience.=20
