Teens ages 13-19 are invited to compete in the first poetry slam of the
season at Playhouse Square on Saturday, September 17, 2005 at 2:00.
Teens need to arrive at Idea Center at Playhouse Square (1375 Euclid
Avenue) by 1:30 pm to register and should come prepared with three
original poems to perform. First prize is $100. Pre-registration is
strongly encouraged by calling 216-348-7909 or emailing

The Teen Slam will be followed immediately by an Adult Slam at 2:30;
registration is closed for the adult slam.

 What is Slam U! at Playhouse Square?

 SLAM U! is Playhouse Square Arts Education Department's Poetry Slam for
teens to speak their minds. While striving to write and perform their
best work, teens may compete for a place on Cleveland's National Youth
Competition Team that will travel to Brave New Voices in New York City
in April 2006.=20

In the National scene, Poetry Slams - or the competitive art of
performance poetry - have continued to gain popularity. Each year poets
from across the nation qualify to compete in the National Poetry Slam -
and Cleveland has long been a part.=20

Since 1998, the Classic Cleveland Poetry Slam has been slamming at
locations around the city. The adult Slam has landed at the Beachland
Ballroom every third Sunday.   Finalists each week compete for four
spots to the National Poetry Slam competition.=20

Now Playhouse Square has found an opportunity for teens to get into the
national scene. In a laid-back atmosphere, teens will work with
Cleveland's poets to develop their skills and earn a spot on Cleveland's
