Opens Actors=E2=80=99  Summit=E2=80=99s 05-06 Season=20
Actors=E2=80=99 Summit Theater announces the opening of Neil Simon=E2=80=
=99s  musical=20
comedy They=E2=80=99re Playing Our Song, with music by Marvin Hamlisch and =20=
lyrics by Carol=20
Bayer Sager. The play will have a preview performance on Thursday, September=
 =20
8, and will play through September 25 at Actors=E2=80=99 Summit Theater in d=
owntown =20
Hudson. =20
The Play=20
They're Playing Our Song ran for 1,082 performances on Broadway (from=20
2/11/1979 - 9/6/1981 and starred Lucie Arnaz and Robert Klein). The show's=20=
book is=20
by Neil Simon. It is the only musical he wrote from scratch. The play was=20
inspired by the real life romance of the show's composer, Marvin Hamlisch,=20=
and=20
lyricist, Carole Bayer Sager. They were married at the time of the opening,=
=20
but the show's =E2=80=9Chappily  ever after=E2=80=9D ending didn't apply to=20=
their=20
relationship.  =20
Simon fictionalized the Hamlisch/Sager romance so that a composer named=20
Vernon Gersch needs a new lyricist, who turns out to be madcap Sonia Walsk.=
 Their=20
first notes are out of tune. She's awed by Vernon's Oscar and Emmy awards.=20
He's put off by her disorganized ways and unimpressed by the cast-off peasa=
nt=20
dress from a production of The Cherry Orchard she dons for their first=20
meeting. It's clearly not a match made in heaven -- at least not until the=20=
final=20
curtain.=20

The Cast=20
Returning to the Actors=E2=80=99 Summit stage for the fourth time is Shani F=
erry, =20
playing the role of the soon-to-be-love-struck lyricist, Sonia. Playing the=20=
role=20
 of the composer is Donnie Long who will be making his Actors=E2=80=99 Summi=
t  debut.=20
Shani Ferry previously appeared in The Shakespeare Revue, Cotton Patch=20
Gospel and Cricket on the Hearth. Some of her favorite roles include Sarah=20=
 in=20
Guys and Dolls, Philia in A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, a=
nd=20
Snookie in 110 in the Shade. =20
Donnie Long is a Cuyahoga Falls native. He has been seen locally in=20
productions of "Into the Woods" (Lakeland Theatre) and "The Fix" (Beck Cent=
er), and=20
spent a year performing in "The Midnight Martini Show" at Pickwick and=20
Frolic. Favorite roles include Count Carl Magnus in "A Little Night Music"=
, Jesus=20
in "Godspell=E2=80=9D and Trenton Corbett in "Zombies from the Beyond". =20
Performance Schedule
They=E2=80=99re Playing Our Song will have a preview performance on Septemb=
er 8. The=20
 official opening is Friday, September 9. Regular performances continue=20
through September 25, Thursdays, Fridays & Saturdays at 8:00 PM and Sunda=
ys at=20
