SAG Financial core is definitely the way to go unless you are a DIE HARD union person. Essentially, you will be asked to turn in your little SAG card, allowing you access to events and things like screenings, etc. There are rarely, if ever, any events in our area, so you really lose nothing there.

Also, you give up your right to hold office in the union and to vote for officers. Again, you really are not giving up anything here either.

What you do gain, is the right to work on ANY production you choose union or not. On a SAG production, you get the same pay and protection that EVERY OTHER SAG member gets, including your pension and health contributions.

The union does not like when you switch because they potentially lose control and money. In fact, you will likely get a run-around if you call the SAG office and try to get information about Fi-core.

The way I see it, SAG goes out of it's way to prevent you to work on what you want, but give very little in return, especially in any market outside of Los Angeles (and even there). As an actor, you should be proactive in your career and grab every opportunity you would like to.

I used to work in LA as a talent agent and a manager as well as being an actor, etc. I used to encourage my clients, in Hollywood mind you, to opt for financial core status -- there are a lot of nonunion films and commercials there -- practically doubling their chances for work. In this market, it seems like a no-brainer to me.
