CityMusic Cleveland to Honor US Troops at Free Concerts

CityMusic Cleveland, the new professional chamber orchestra and arts =20
outreach organization, opens its second season with a series of free =20
concerts honoring the US troops in Iraq & Afghanistan and their =20
families ...

... and you are cordially invited!

The program, conducted by Music Director James Gaffigan, opens with =20
Beethoven's "Cavatina." Written for string quartet late in the =20
composer's life, Beethoven said of it himself that, =93When I think of =20=

the Cavatina, it still brings a tear to my eye.=94 Completely deaf by =20=

this point, he was well aware of his own mortality. All of the =20
CityMusic Cleveland trustees and musicians felt this piece to be a =20
fitting tribute to our sons and daughters, sisters and brothers, =20
fighting or fallen in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The rest of the concert celebrates life, beginning with a joyous =20
suite of Ballet Music from Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's opera Idomeneo. =20
The concert concludes with Mozart's "Prague" Symphony (#38), written =20
in dedication of that city, the capital of Bohemia, whose citizens =20
had shown the composer great enthusiasm and loyalty. In between the =20
two Mozart selections is Prokofiev's "Classical" Symphony, his first, =20=

written when he was 25 years old. It is modeled after the symphonies =20
of Haydn and Mozart, while displaying undeniably 20th-century musical =20=

language.

Composed of many of the finest free-lance musicians in the area, =20
CityMusic Cleveland is dedicated to developing new audiences for =20
classical music and serving as a catalyst for community building. The =20=

ensemble collaborates with neighborhood development organizations and =20=

leaders to strengthen the cultural excellence of their communities. =20
By removing geographic and financial barriers to concert attendance, =20
CityMusic strives to nurture appreciation for live classical =20
performance=97and other cultural events=97and create the next generation =
=20
of arts patrons.

The Cleveland Orchestra and Great Lakes Theater Festival are =20
supporting CityMusic's outreach efforts by offering discount vouchers =20=

to CityMusic audience members.

In addition to the music, CityMusic presents an art exhibit featuring =20=

the photographs of Clevelander Diane Schwartz. Both the concert and =20
the art exhibit are free and open to the public. Everyone is welcome!
